The Hoyas, who have made 31 NCAA Tournament appearances and won the 1984 NCAA title, are looking to rebuild from a 7-25 season last year and 13-50 mark over the past two seasons. The team was pegged for eight in the BIG EAST Preseason Poll under first-year head coach Ed Cooley, who spent the previous 12 years as the bench boss of fellow Big East school Providence. Cooley holds a 335-223 (.600) record in his 18th season as a collegiate head coach.
To open the season, Georgetown split its opening games. The Hoyas downed Le Moyne, 94-57, in the opener, but then fell, 68-67, to Holy Cross on Saturday night. Cooley previously faced RU twice with the Friars and once as the head coach of Fairfield, losing all three games.
The Georgetown roster under their new head coach features 11 newcomers and four returners. The newcomers featured four transfers from "Power 5" Conference schools, including Jayden Epps from Big Ten foe Illinois. Epps, who averaged 9.5 points for the Illini as a freshman, was held to 6 points on 3-of-9 shooting by Rutgers in their lone meeting last year, which came during a stretch where he has scored at least 12 points in the previous four games and in the three games afterwards.
GU's Supreme Cook, who was a three-year starter at Fairfield and averaged 13.1 points and 8.5 rebounds last year, is ninth nationally in offensive rebounding at 5.5 per game. Freshman Rowan Brumbaugh leads the team thus far at 15.0 points per game.
Rutgers is 16-29 all-time against Georgetown. The programs both played in the Big East from 1996-2013 and met at least once annually in that span. The two squads last faced each other in 2013. Rutgers is 11-10 at home against GU. Georgetown has won the last four meetings, with RU's last win over the Hoyas coming in a 71-68 home win on Valentine's Day in 2010. In that game, Jonathan Mitchell scored a career-high 24 points, while Dane Miller had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds as Rutgers earned a home win over the No. 7/8 Hoyas. Georgetown has won 12 of the last 13 meetings against RU dating back to 2004.
