PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers football (6-6, 3-6) lost to Maryland (7-5, 4-5), 42-24, on Saturday in front of 47,012 fans at SHI Stadium.

RB Kyle Monangai finished the game with 20 carries for 118 yards and became the eighth player in program history to surpass 1,000 yards on the ground in a season. With his 1,099 rushing yards so far this season, Monangai leads the Big Ten and is the only player in the conference to eclipse 1,000 yards. QB Gavin Wimsatt threw for 165 yards and a touchdown and added 48 yards on the ground with two rushing scores.

DB Max Melton intercepted his third pass of the season, while DB Flip Dixon forced a fumble that was recovered by DL Isaiah Iton. LB Mohamed Toure set a career high with 11 tackles with a sack.

FIRST HALF

Maryland opened the game with back-to-back touchdowns before PK Jai Patel drilled a 50-yard field goal for Rutgers' first points of the night. The Terrapins added one more touchdown before the end of the first quarter.

The Scarlet Knights scored their first touchdown of the game midway through the second quarter, as Wimsatt fought off a blitz to find RB Aaron Young for a 10-yard touchdown pass. Young's 11th career score cut into Maryland's lead, 28-10.

RU forced its first turnover of the night after DB Flip Dixon forced a fumble in RU territory, which was recovered by DL Isaiah Iton. The Scarlet Knights' defense followed with another takeaway on the following possession thanks to Melton, who intercepted QB Taulia Tagovailoa in Terrapin territory.

Wimsatt connected with WR Isaiah Washington for a 42-yard completion on the ensuing play, which put the Scarlet Knights in scoring position deep in Maryland territory. Wimsatt punched in it on the next play, making it a 28-17 deficit at halftime.

SECOND HALF

Maryland scored first out of the locker room, as a one-yard touchdown run from QB Billy Edwards Jr. made it 35-17 in favor of the Terrapins.

In RU's opening drive of the fourth quarter, RB Kyle Monangai carried eight times for 66 yards to set up another touchdown rush by Wimsatt. Monangai collected his sixth 100-yard rushing game of the season on the drive, which brought him to 1,099 yards on the season.

Another Edwards Jr. touchdown late in the game would push the Maryland advantage to 42-24.

UP NEXT

Rutgers will play in the 12th bowl game in program history. Bowl selections will be announced Dec. 3.
