Greg Schiano said. "The bowl experience is a reward for the players. We are blessed with a chance to be together for the next month and to compete against an excellent opponent. Having played in the Pinstripe Bowl before, we know the Yankees do a tremendous job in making this a memorable time for our program. The Marching Scarlet Knights will be in attendance at Yankee Stadium and are set to perform a pregame show. The band is no stranger to New York, recently appearing in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Rutgers twice previously appeared in the Pinstripe Bowl, taking on Iowa State in 2011 and Notre Dame in 2013. This will be the 13
th time RU plays at Yankee Stadium dating back to 1926, with three prior games at the current version of the venue. Overall, this will be the Scarlet Knights' 51
st game at an
MLB stadium and sixth such bowl game.
In addition to sweeping the non-conference portion of the schedule with wins over Temple, Virginia Tech and Wagner, Rutgers matched the program high with three Big Ten victories. That included a season-opening win over Northwestern, an 18-point comeback in the fourth quarter to beat Michigan State and 276 rushing yards on the way to topping Indiana on the road.
Rutgers held Big Ten opponents to an average of 25.1 points and 337.9 yards per game, the best marks in conference play for the defense in a season since joining the league. The unit ranks 18
th nationally in overall total defense (313.7), 11
th in passing yards allowed (175.9) and has totaled 11 stops in the red zone. Offensively, the Scarlet Knights are led by the Big Ten's leading rusher and All-Big Ten Second Team RB
Kyle Monangai, who has posted 1,099 rushing yards on 217 carries. He has scored seven touchdowns, while QB
Gavin Wimsatt has rushed for nine scores and thrown for nine. PK
Jai Patel earned All-Big Ten Third Team honors after converting 14-of-16 field goal attempts, on pace for the most accurate season in program history.
RU saw 13 players recognized in the All-Big Ten voting overall.
The Scarlet Knights and Hurricanes met annually in Big East play from 1993-2003, with UM being ranked in seven of the matchups and winning the prior 11 meetings. RU is 2-2 all-time in bowl games against current ACC opponents and 5-2 overall under Schiano.
Schiano served as the defensive coordinator at Miami in 1999 and 2000 before becoming the Rutgers head coach in 2001. The Hurricanes posted a 20-5 record during that time, including an 11-1 mark, the No. 2 national ranking and a Sugar Bowl win in 2000. That defense finished fifth nationally in scoring defense (15.5) after ranking 12th in the category the year before (17.2). Miami head coach Mario Cristobal was on Schiano's first three staffs at Rutgers (2001-03), working with the offensive tackles and tight ends for the first two seasons before shifting his focus solely to the offensive line in 2003.
