PISCATAWAY, N.J. — No. 13/14 Rutgers men's lacrosse downed No. 5/6 Loyola Maryland, 10-6, on Saturday afternoon at SHI Stadium for the program's first ranked victory of the 2023 season. The win improves the Scarlet Knights to 3-1 this spring and hands the Greyhounds their first loss at 2-1.
Shane Knobloch had a career day, recording seven points in the win. The junior netted three goals and dished out four assists. Sophomore
Dante Kulas was the other Scarlet Knight with a hat trick.
Brian Cameron secured his fourth multi-goal game of the spring. The senior scored two goals and added one assist for RU.
Ross Scott and
Jack Aimone also added one goal apiece in the contest.
Goalkeeper
Kyle Mullin eclipsed his season-high with 16 saves in the net. The senior worked to a season-best .727 save percentage in the victory.
Long-stick midfielder
Ethan Rall caused two turnovers, moving him into a tie for second all-time in program history with 67 in his career.
Game Summary
The first half was highlighted by back-to-back three goal runs by both teams.
Kulas opened the game's scoring with back-to-back goals midway through the first quarter. Knobloch brought Rutgers' run to three with his first goal of the contest. Loyola was quick to respond, netting its first goal less than a minute later.
The Greyhounds added another goal at the end of the first, and the Scarlet Knights took a one-goal lead into the second.
Loyola knotted the game at three with a goal at the 8:13 mark in the second quarter. After a five minute scoring drought, Knobloch added a goal to give the Scarlet Knights a 4-3 advantage. The Greyhounds added a goal, sending the teams into the locker room tied, 4-4.
Rutgers broke out in the second half with a five-goal run. Kulas quickly got things going for Rutgers, scoring his third goal of the game just seven seconds into the third quarter.
Ross Scott and Knobloch then added one goal each, giving RU a 7-4 edge three minutes into the second half. Cameron and Aimone extended the lead to five with one goal apiece. The Greyhounds added a goal with six seconds remaining in the third to end the RU run.
Each team netted one goal in the fourth quarter, and the Scarlet Knights secured the Top 5 win, 10-6.
Postgame Notes
- Rall's two caused turnovers moved into a tie for second all-time with Jacob Fradkin (2009-12). The senior now has 67 caused turnovers in his career.
- Knobloch's seven-point performance marks a career-high for the midfielder. The junior also recorded his first multi-goal game of the spring and matched his career high with four assists.
- Mullin had a season-high 16 saves in the net.
- Kulas has 10 goals in four games in 2023, already surpassing his 2022 mark of nine goals in nine goals.
- Cameron's two goals is good for his fourth multi-score contest this season.
- The Scarlet Knight's 11 turnovers is their lowest total this spring.
The win represents:
- RU's 34th ranked win since 2003. 24 of those victories have come under head coach Brian Brecht.
- The Scarlet Knights' third top-five victory since 2019.
- Improving to a 12-6 record against ranked opponents since 2021.
