CHARLESTON, S.C. – Rutgers softball split day two of the Low Country Classic on Saturday at Patriots Point.
The Scarlet Knights opened with an eight-inning 2-1 heartbreaker to Syracuse and followed with its second win over the hosts in a 9-4 victory over the College of Charleston.
Rutgers heads into the final day of the Low Country Classic on Sunday at 11-3 overall.
Syracuse 2, Rutgers 1 (8)
- Kyleigh Sand was 2-for-4 with her 15th stolen base of the year. Â
- Payton Lincavage drove in RU's lone run of the game on a double scoring Ryann Orange.
- Morgan Smith started inside the circle throwing five innings allowing one run and four hits while striking out five. Raimy Gamsby sent down three Orange on strikes tossing the final three innings.
- Rutgers ended the top of the second catching the Orange's Laila Alves taking an extra base to retire the side, however in trying to get to second, her teammate Madelyn Lopez scored from third before the out.
- The Scarlet Knights though tied it up in the bottom of the inning. Ryann Orange led off with a triple to right-center field and was brought home on the next batter as Payton Lincavage doubled to left.
- Rutgers had runners on second in the bottom of the fifth, sixth and seventh but were unable to advance further.
- Raimy Gamsby, coming off her first collegiate complete-game victory, entered the circle in the sixth inning. While Syracuse managed to get runners on the corners, Gamsby retired the side on one of her three strikeouts.
- In the top of the eighth, with Syracuse's Ryan Starr starting off extra innings on second, an errant throw allowed the Orange to score.
- A sac bunt from Katie Wingert advanced RU's second-base runner Morgan Smith to third in the bottom of the inning. The Scarlet Knights' Orange followed with a bunt, but Smith was tagged by the catcher going for home.
Rutgers 9, College of Charleston 4
- Rutgers scored four runs in the first, thanks to back-to-back home runs from the bats of Ryann Orange and Katie Wingert, added three runs in the second and tacked on two additional runs in the third to return to the win column.
- Orange led Rutgers going 3-for-3 including a pair of doubles and a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. The Scarlet Knight rookie also had the start.
- Morgan Smith went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a sacrifice fly leading to two RBIs and two runs scored.
- Jaden Vickers improved to 3-1 on the year throwing three innings and allowing one run on two hits while striking out a trio of Cougars. Georgia Ingle picked up the save.
- Rutgers pounded out six hits, including back-to-back home runs, for a 4-0 lead by the end of its first at-bat. Morgan Smith used an RBI single to score Kyleigh Sand from second, followed by a two-run home run from Ryann Orange to left with Katie Wingert immediately following with a solo shot in the same direction.
- The College of Charleston plated two in their first turn at bat. Aniz Roman walked and Karlee Hughes was hit by a pitch leading to an RBI ground by Audri Besler and a single to left from Mia Dittoe to get the Cougars on the board.
- The Scarlet Knight punched back by batting through the order for the second consecutive inning. An RBI triple by Smith, RBI double by Orange and RBI single from Calista Collins put RU in front 7-2.
- Rutgers added two more in the third. Smith punched in Kyleigh Sand on a sacrifice fly while Payton Lincavage took home on a double steal giving the Scarlet Knights a 9-2 edge.
- The Cougars added two more runs – one in the third and another in their final at-bat in the seventh. The bottom of the third saw Dittoe add another RBI with two outs on a single to right center while the final inning had two aboard for the College of Charleston with two outs for Chloe Valdez to double to left for a run.
- RU got out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth and sixth innings with the Scarlet Knights turning one of three double plays in the game to get out of the sixth.
- Rutgers smacked back-to-back home runs for the first time since Wingert and former Scarlet Knights Anyssa Iliopoulos and Kiana Workman hit a trio in order back on February 10, 2020, in an 8-3 season-opening win over Army. It was the second time this season RU has hit two home runs in a game.
- Katie Wingert collected career home run number 24 and needs two more to move into a tie with Anyssa Iliopoulos for fourth on the Rutgers all-time leaders list.
- Rutgers collected three double plays against the Cougars tying for the most in a game in records dating back to 2004. The Scarlet Knight also turned a trio of double plays against Florida Atlantic on March 14, 2018, in a 5-4 win in 15 innings.
- With her stolen base, Kyleigh Sand moved into eighth all-time at Rutgers with 39 career stolen bags. She needs one more to move into a tie for seventh with Brittney Lindley (2009-10) and four more to tie for sixth along with Amanda Shaw (2006-09).
- Sand's on-base streak has reached 50 straight games.<>< li=""> <>
