PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers softball was topped 3-2 in its Big Ten home opener on Friday afternoon at the Rutgers Softball Complex by Purdue.
The loss snapped a nine-game win streak for the Scarlet Knights as they dropped to 26-11 overall and 3-1 in league action. The Boilermakers, who came back from a 2-0 deficit in the sixth, improved to 16-18 overall and 1-3 in Big Ten play ending a five-game losing streak.
Purdue 3, Rutgers 2
- Rutgers broke the scoreless stalemate in the bottom of the fifth off Morgan Smith's two-run double to left.
- After limiting the Boilermakers to two hits and stranding five on base, Purdue responded to the Scarlet Knight lead with three hits and three walks in the sixth to pull ahead. With a pair in scoring position, Becca Edwards singled to right field put the visitors onto the scoreboard while two batters later an infield single to the circle from Jordyn Ramos tied the game up at 2-2. With the bases loaded and two outs, Jade Moy walked in Alivia Meeks for what would be the game-winning run.Â
The series continues on Saturday at the Rutgers Softball Complex. Game time has been moved up to 1 p.m. Admission is free.
