No. 16 Rowing Takes on Ivy League Invitational
Apr 13 | Women's Rowing
PRINCETON, N.J. – No. 16 Rowing is set for the Ivy League Invitational on Sat. and Sun., April 15-16 on Lake Carnegie. There are three sessions scheduled over the two days for eight boats - beginning at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. on Sunday.
The Scarlet Knights, returning to the CRCA Poll this week at No. 16 in the nation, are one of seven teams in the 10-team field with a CRCA national ranking in the poll heading into the weekend. Rutgers will race against No. 6 Brown, Cornell, No. 18 Oregon State, No. 10 UPenn, No. 17 USC, and No. 9 Virginia.
Rutgers made its return to the national rankings after a strong showing at the Big Ten Invitational last weekend in Florida, where the Scarlet Knights scored three race wins against another heavily ranked field of boats. The 3rd Varsity 4 won twice, and the 2nd Varsity 4 picked up a win - combining for three wins over ranked teams in the process.
The Varsity 8 turned in a second-place performance in the afternoon last Friday, behind No. 2 Stanford and ahead of No. 18 Tennessee and Minnesota. The Varsity 4 also came in second in a close afternoon race four seconds behind No. 2 Stanford and in front of No. 18 Tennessee and Minnesota. The 2nd Varsity 8 came in second on Saturday 4.4 seconds behind No. 15 SMU while beating out No. 20 Indiana and No. 12 Duke.
All three of Rutgers' NCAA boats outperformed their seeding heading into the national regatta last season, which had the Varsity 8 at 16th, and the 2nd Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 at 15th. The Scarlet Knights earned one of 11 at-large bids to the NCAA Championships after a second consecutive third-place performance at the Big Ten Championships in Indianapolis. Rutgers matched its best conference championships finish in third place while earning a program-record six medals, including its first gold with the 2nd Novice 8 winning their race against the Big Ten competition.
The 2023 Rutgers squad returns nine rowers from the NCAA boats, including Second Team All-America selection Hannah Heideveld, who also represented United States Rowing by winning a goal medal with the women's eight at the World Under 23 Championships last summer. RU also returns junior coxswain Emily Mahaffy, a 2021 Second-Team All-American as a freshman.
