PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers softball took two from Maryland on a blustery Wednesday afternoon at the Rutgers Softball Complex.
Game one saw the Scarlet Knights enter the bottom of the seventh down 3-0 facing a no-hitter to storm back for a 4-3 victory giving head coach Kristen Butler her 100th victory at Rutgers.
RU completed the Terp sweep with a 5-2 win in game two taking the lead with two runs in the fourth and adding some cushion with two additional runs in the sixth.
The two victories improved the Scarlet Knights to 29-12 overall and 6-2 in Big Ten action. Maryland, who this season has captured wins over No. 3 Oklahoma State and No. 22 Oregon, dropped to 26-10 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
Rutgers 4, Maryland 3
- Morgan Smith walked it off with two outs in the seventh knocking in two runs on a single thru the left side scoring Payton Lincavage to tie the game and Leilani Chavez to win the contest
- Kiersten Withstandley's base hit to open the bottom of the seventh broke up the Maryland no-hitter which up until that point had limited the Scarlet Knights to four walks.
- Ryann Orange picked up her first career win by tossing the final two innings and striking out a pair of Terps along the way.
- Maryland took an early 1-0 lead with their first at-bat as Amelia Lech used a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to score Kiley Goff.
- The Terps added two more in the fifth. With two outs and two aboard, Megan Mikami had an RBI single and Goff flew out to right for a sac fly scoring Sammi Woods from third.
- Rutgers used two hits, two walks and two fielder's choices in the seventh for the come-back victory. Withstandley broke up Courtney Wyche's no-hitter with a single up the middle and Rutgers continued to reach base on a walk from pinch-hitter Megan Herka and a fielder's choice by Ryann Orange. With the bases now loaded and no outs, pinch hitter Georgia Ingle walked in Withstandley for RU's first run. The Terps managed to get the force at the plate on at-bats by Kayla Bock and Kyleigh Sand. With the bases still loaded, Payton Lincavage collected a full count and eventually ball four to walk in pinch runner Taylor Lane for the Scarlet Knights to trail 3-2. Morgan Smith then delivered a single thru the left side for two runs giving Rutgers the win.
- Rutgers last came back for a win in the seventh inning in a 9-8 win over George Washington back on March 6, 2022. The Scarlet Knights were trailing 8-6 heading into the final inning with the Colonials at the Liberty Tournament.
- The walk-off was Morgan Smith's second at Rutgers. The junior also had a three-run home run walk-off against Robert Morris in the sixth in a 10-1 win on February 24th at the Low Country Classic in Charleston, South Carolina.
- Head coach Kristen Butler picks up her 100th win "On The Banks" in her fifth season at Rutgers. Back on March 25 at Illinois, Butler earned her 200th career win.

- Taylor Fawcett was 2-for-2 with an RBI double and two runs scored.
- Ryann Orange hit 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
- Kyleigh Sand went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
- Katie Wingert added her team-leading 14th double of the season.
- Jaden Vickers picked up the win improving to 9-4 on the season. She allowed no runs, and no hits and gave up two walks while fanning seven in four innings of play.
- Katie Wingert was responsible for the early Scarlet Knight lead as she scored Morgan Smith on a double to left center.
- Maryland claimed the lead in the top of the fourth. With Terp runners on first and second Taylor Liguori managed an RBI single to center and Campbell Kline's bunt allowed M Jones to score from third for the 2-1 Maryland edge.
- Rutgers, however, rebounded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Taylor Fawcett notched an RBI double down the left-field line and Ryann Orange scored Fawcett on a single to short.
- The Scarlet Knight added cushion in the sixth with two more runs. With two outs, Orange posted an RBI double to left center and a Kyleigh Sand single brought Orange home for the final 5-2 margin.
Rutgers' next two Big Ten series will be on the road. The Scarlet Knights travel to Ohio State for a weekend series beginning Friday, April 7th.
