PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Paul Mulcahy continues to be a model student-athlete ambassador for the Rutgers men's basketball team.
Mulcahy was honored at the annual Chancellor-Provost's Student Leadership Awards Gala on Tuesday night with the 2023 Paul Robeson Renaissance Award. Over 200 nominations were submitted, and Paul was one of 37 students accepted for the award. He received the award alongside rowing's student-athlete Hannah Heideveld, who was given the Competitive Excellence Award.
The annual Chancellor-Provost's Student Leadership Awards recognizes and rewards students for their remarkable contributions to the University and community. These students consistently demonstrate collaboration, leadership, and resourcefulness, have a tremendous passion for Rutgers, and go outside of their normal responsibilities to achieve goals.
Mulcahy, the recipient of Paul Robeson Award was chosen as the top student to have shown commitment to human justice, activism, and the values of a global citizen. The award each year is given to a leader who possesses extraordinary and diverse talent and intellectual energy across a range of disciplines. The nominee each year exemplifies the principles of which Rutgers graduate, Paul Robeson, devoted his life; scholarship, humanitarianism, advocacy, athleticism, and artistry while practicing the inclusive approach to diversity that the University holds at a core value.
In his time at Rutgers,
Paul Mulcahy founded his own charitable foundation. The Grateful4 Foundation has the mission to spread the idea of gratitude and inspire a chain reaction of selfless acts. In February, Mulcahy's foundation is organizing a drive at Rutgers to collect diapers, wipes, baby formula clothes, and other hygiene products to support mothers. On this year's senior night, Mulcahy partnered with New Brunswick City Center through name, image, and likeness to provide gift cards for over 260 supporters of the program. The gift cards included the team managers, the marching band and the security at Jersey Mike's Arena.
Mulcahy, a 2022-23 Big Ten Honorable Mention has had one of the best winning careers in Rutgers basketball history and is currently fourth all-time in school history in career assists (457 assists). He has scored 818 career points, has 457 rebounds and 112 career steals.
Mulcahy has run the Scarlet Knights offense at the point guard position for the last two seasons and has shot a lethal 45.1 percent from the field in career (308-683). RU has had four-straight winning seasons for the first time in 31 years with Mulcahy on the roster. RU is (73-57) in that period.
Throughout Mulcahy's career at RU, the Scarlet Knights have broken a 30-year NCAA tournament drought, won the first game in the tournament in 38 years, and went back-to-back to the tournament for the first time in 46 years.
