PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Kevin Steel, a two-time All-American, 2013 NCAA 100 breaststroke runner-up, 2013 USA National 50 breaststroke champion and member of the 2023 NCAA women's swimming and diving championship staff, has joined the Rutgers women's swimming and diving program as an assistant coach.
"I feel blessed to have someone of Kevin's coaching pedigree believe in what we are doing here at Rutgers," said head coach Jon Maccoll. "He's a Jersey guy coming home from coaching at the University of Virginia and a former swimmer at the University of Arizona. I believe Kevin will have an immediate and positive impact on our women here at Rutgers."
Steel arrives "On The Banks" after spending last season as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Virginia. Last winter the Cavaliers won their third-consecutive NCAA title with 11 total champions behind five relay and six individual NCAA championships.
Before joining the Cavaliers staff, Steel was a volunteer assistant swim coach and assistant strength and conditioning coach at Kenyon College. During his time with the Owls, the women's program won the 2022 Women's DIII NCAA Championship team title while he also served as the team's strength and conditioning coach. In addition to working with the sprint and short stroke groups, he also coordinated all team dryland activities.
Steel began his coaching career at his alma mater, the University of Arizona, as a volunteer on the pool deck with the Wildcats and as an intern in the Olympic Sports Weight Room assisting the strength staff with the basketball, baseball, tennis, softball and swimming & diving teams.
In the pool, Steel made Olympic Trial appearances in 2012 and 2016, earned a spot on the 2013 USA World Championship team and twice broke the U.S. Open 50 breaststroke record in addition to taking second place in the 100 breaststroke at the 2013 NCAA championships.
A native of Moorestown, New Jersey, Steel graduated from Arizona with a degree in biochemistry.
Rutgers women's swimming & diving earned its highest Big Ten Championship point total in 2023 and finished the season with 99 personal bests, 65 event victories, 25 times/scores among the school's top 10 and 24 NCAA B cuts/zone scores. The Scarlet Knights reached the Big Ten podium six times and set three school records.
