Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 16 Field Hockey Blanks Stanford

The Scarlet Knights were buoyed by goals from Puck Winter and Iris Langejans in the victory.

PALO ALTO, Calif. – No, 16 Rutgers field hockey earned another win on Sunday afternoon on their opening week trip to California. The Scarlet Knights claimed a 2-0 win over Stanford. The Scarlet Knights were buoyed by goals from Puck Winter and Iris Langejans in the victory.

Rutgers dominated play in the game, outshooting the Cardinal 16-4. They held a 6-3 advantage in corners.

Rutgers struck first, tallying two goals in a span of less than a minute in the first quarter. At the 8:30 mark, RU scored the first marker off a penalty corner. A textbook corner play saw Puck Winter put the ball home, with assists to Vicky Jure and Iris Langejans.

Just 53 seconds later, the visitors broke through again. Rutgers gained another penalty corner, and the resulting play led to a penalty stroke opportunity for RU. Iris Langejans stepped to the dot and converted the stroke for RU, giving them a 2-0 lead just under 10 minutes into the game.

In the third quarter, RU thought they had added to their lead with a Noelle Leaf tally, but after review, the goal was overturned as it was deemed that it hit a foot, and the score remained at 2-0. Nonetheless, RU remained in control of the game, and earned their second straight 2-0 win of the road trip, following Friday's 2-0 win at UC Davis.

Rutgers has one more game to complete this opening trip to California. RU is at Cal Monday, a 4 p.m. game that will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.
