Sep 11 | Field Hockey
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 12 Rutgers field hockey redshirt sophomore Puck Winter was recognized as a standout by the Big Ten Conference on Monday afternoon, earning Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors. The native of Deventer, Netherlands starred for RU on all ends of the field during a two-game winning weekend, as RU won road contests at Villanova and No. 15 Princeton to improve to 6-0 on the season. The record marks the team's best start to a campaign since 2008.
On Friday, Winter scored three goals, marking RU's first hat trick since 2021 and just the second since 2017. She also added a defensive save in the team's 6-2 win over Villanova. On Sunday, Winter broke a 1-1 tie in double-overtime, scoring the game-winning goal.
Winter also received an honorable mention nod for Division I Defensive Players of the Week from the NFHCA.
Winter now leads the team with six goals on the season, also pacing the team in game-winning goals (three) and defensive saves (two). A preseason Watch List selection by both the Big Ten and NFHCA, Winter has played every minute this season. She is fifth in the conference in both points per game and goals per game.
The Scarlet Knights start Big Ten play this Friday, as they will travel to take on No. 11 Penn State. A win over the Nittany Lions would put RU at 7-0 and mark the best start to a season in program history. The team then plays its home opener on Sunday when they host La Salle.
