Feb 26 | Field Hockey
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Two athletes with affiliations to the Rutgers field hockey program will participate in international tournaments this upcoming week that serve as qualifying events for the FIH Hockey World Cup. Field hockey alumna Katie Larmour will play with Team Ireland in a women's qualifying tournament held in Santiago, Chile, while RU assistant coach Ajai Dhadwal will play with Team USA in a men's qualifier held in Ismailia, Egypt.
The Team USA men will compete in Egypt at the Men's FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers starting on Sunday, March 1. The United States will begin with pool play matches, starting that Sunday against the host side Egypt. Malaysia, Austria, Pakistan, China, England and Japan will all compete as well. Pool matches stretch from March 1-4, followed by semifinals on March 6 and the final on March 7. At least three teams from the event will guarantee a spot at the FIH Hockey World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands, hockey's flagship tournament, which takes place this August. This is the final opportunity for the US side to secure a world cup spot.
On the women's side, Ireland will compete in Pool B play in Chile, joined by Japan, Canada and Malaysia, with Pool A consisting of Australia, Chile, France and Switzerland. The preliminary round kicks off on March, March 2, with Ireland starting against Malaysia. The teams will compete through pool play to set up the semifinals on March 7 and finals on March 8. This will be the final qualification chance for the women's side, with four teams having a chance to earn a berth to the World Cup.
Dhadwal was been a long-time member of Team USA, including serving as its captain, and approaching 150 career international caps. He has competed multiple times previously at the Pan Am Cup. Dhadwal has earned 13 medals with team USA, including four golds. Recently on the international level, Dhadwal competed at the 2025 Pan American Cup, Can Am Indoor Tournament and at the FIH Men's Nation's Cup in Oman.
Dhadwal initially joined the Rutgers field hockey coaching staff in 2017, shortly after competing in that year's Outdoor Pan Am Cup. He was on the coaching staff through the team's Big Ten Tournament Championship in the fall of 2021. He rejoined the coaching staff in 2024 for his second stint on the RU bench.
Larmour has recently made her mark on the international stage with Team Ireland, initially earning selection last summer, and continuing to compete at events such as the EuroHockey Championship and the FIH pro League.
Larmour played at Rutgers from 2016 to 2021. Over that time, she was a fixture in the team's midfield, playing in 86 games (83 of them starts) and scoring 17 goals with 18 assists for 52 points, including six game-winning goals. She ranks in the top-15 in program history in both assists and points. Larmour was Rutgers' Headley-Singer Award winner in 2022. She was a two-time All-American, reaching First Team in 2021, a four-time All-Region selection (three times on the First Team) and a three-time First Team All-Big Ten selection. In 2019, she was a member of the Big Ten All-Tournament team, and in 2021, she was a key piece in leading RU to the Big Ten Tournament championship. She was also a First Team All-ECAC selection, multi-time Werblin Award winner and a team captain.
