Huskies Come Away with 4-3 Win over Home RU Squad
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 17 Rutgers field hockey had a back-and-forth battle hosting a top-10 team on Sunday afternoon, ultimately falling short by the smallest of margins. No. 10 UConn earned a 4-3 victory following a penalty shootout. The Huskies improved to 4-1 on the year while Rutgers, who faced their fifth ranked team over their first six games and played their second penalty shootout in the last eight days, dropped to 2-4 on the season.
Rutgers had three different goal scorers in the game: Laura Loycke, Lauren Iaccio and Anna Cogdell. For Lauren Iaccio, it marked the freshman's first collegiate goal. Goalkeeper Emily Nicholls made nine saves, her second consecutive game this weekend marking a new season-high in saves. Assists for RU went to Ela Gandy and Eden Doucelin.
A high-action game, UConn had a 15-13 advantage in shots. The Huskies earned 12 penalty corners in the contest to six for RU.
UConn improves to 32-6-1 in the all-time series, halting RU momentum in the series after the Scarlet Knights won four of the past five meetings. Five of the last six meetings between the two teams have gone to extra time, with this being the second shootout and sixth straight one-goal game.
Rutgers scored first in the game, tallying on a corner just 6:34 into the contest. After the initial shot was saved, Laura Loycke put home a rebound for an early 1-0 lead for the home team.
UConn answered back on a corner early in the second quarter. It was the second corner of the sequence, with Nicholls making two saves on the first. On the second, the initial UConn shot was saved, by RU was unable to clear and Charlotte Ritter found space to score the equalizer.
In the opening minute of the second half, RU retook the lead. Again, it was a corner, and a true shot from the top off a stick stop. Freshman back Lauren Iaccio launched it home for the 2-1 advantage.
However, that lead would last just four minutes. A true penalty corner on the other end saw Lucy Zich put home the tying score for a 2-2 game.
In the fourth quarter, UConn went ahead 3-2. The Huskies took their first lead of the day as a shot was redirected in front of the goal midway through the frame.
Once again, there was an answer as RU came back with the equalizer. Down a goal with just over three minutes to play, Anna Cogdell came through with a great shot that evened the score at 3-3.
The two squads would play through regulation and 15 minutes of overtime, but were unable to break that deadlock. Just as the game had for RU at home last Sunday (where RU defeated No. 12 Syracuse), the Scarlet Knights once again went into a penalty shootout.
In the penalty shootout, Martha Goodridge put one home for RU. However, the visitors tallied three, taking the shootout 3-1 and the contest overall by a 4-3 final score.
