2-0 Loss to Defending National Runner-Up
PRINCETON, N.J. – No. 17 Rutgers field hockey held their own in a road game against a top-5 team before ultimately falling to No. 4 Princeton by a 2-0 final score. Rutgers now stands at 2-3, with its losses all coming against ranked teams, ahead of hosting No. 10 UConn this Sunday in the 'Field Hockey Attacks Cancer' game at the Bauer Complex.
Princeton improved to 2-1 on the season and 20-5 dating back to last season as the defending National Runner-Up earned their second ranked win of the season. The Tigers have yet to allow a field goal through three games and 195 minutes of gameplay. The series between these two teams in now 4-4 over the past eight meetings, with the Tigers winning their home game for the first time since 2019.
Shots were 14-5 Princeton, with Emily Nicholls making nine saves for RU. Corners were even at 5-5.
Princeton's goals came early and late, scoring in the first and fourth quarters. Princeton scored the game's first goal 10 minutes in. A quick developing play from the Tigers saw a pass into the front of the net with Molly Nye sneaking behind the defense for a one-timer on the touch to take the early lead.
The Scarlet Knights had a number of offensive chances early, with four first quarter corners. However, after halftime, Princeton took the offensive pressure advantage, outshooting RU 9-0 after halftime. Nicholls' six saves after the break kept RU alive, but the Tigers added an insurance tally with just over three minutes to go. Pru Lindsey had the goal, finishing off a give-and-go play from the right side with Nicholls' aggressively in pursuit.
Up next, RU will be back home on Sunday. After defeating No. 12 Syracuse in their last home game, they have the chance for their second ranked win of the season when No. 10 UConn visits for a noon game.
