Laura Loycke Scores Goal for RU

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 20 Rutgers field hockey fell to No. 5 Virginia on Friday in the Big Ten / ACC Challenge at the Bauer Complex. The Scarlet Knights got a fourth quarter goal from Laura Loycke, but were unable to stage a comeback in a 2-1 win for the Cavaliers.

Shots were even at 7-7 for the game, and corners were 5-2 RU on the day. The game was played very tightly in the midfield throughout the contest.

Virginia broke through with two goals just six minutes apart in the second quarter. The Cavaliers got on the scoreboard in the 22^nd minute of game action. Emily Eaton started the play with a long ball into the Rutgers circle, then Catalina Quinteros put the shot home for the Cavaliers.

UVA scored again later in the quarter. This time, it was Kate Logsdon who scored, collecting the ball with her back to the goal, turning, and putting in a shot that gave the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Rutgers had a late push, earning multiple fourth quarter corners. With just over four minutes remaining, RU broke through. Laura Loycke inserted a corner for
RU. She sent the ball to the top, where Martha Goodridge sent it back towards the back post and Loycke redirected the shot in for RU's goal. The Scarlet Knights continued to press for an equalizer, but were unable to find one, and UVA claimed the 2-1 win. Virginia has now won all six lifetime meetings.

Up Next

Rutgers remains home as the Big Ten / ACC Challenge continues on Sunday. The next game comes against No. 12 Syracuse at 2 pm on Sunday. Ohio State is also part of the Big Ten / ACC games at Bauer, with games Friday against Syracuse and Sunday against Virginia.

RU has two more ranked foes next weekend. On Friday, RU plays at No. 2 Princeton and then on Sunday they play host to No. 9 UConn. Five of the first six RU opponents are ranked. Nine teams on RU's schedule to be ranked in the preseason of NFHCA Coaches Poll.
