Women’s Soccer Drops Big Ten Opener at Indiana

Girman & Vicari score for the Scarlet Knights, but Hoosiers net the game-winner in the 85th

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Rutgers women's soccer (4-3-2) erased an early 2-0 deficit at unbeaten Indiana (7-0-2) on Sunday afternoon, but eventually succumbed to a late Hoosier goal in the 85th minute and dropped the Big Ten opener, 3-2.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • The Hoosiers scored in the opening minute, and again in the fifth minute to take a fast, 2-0 lead.
  • Gia Girman got Rutgers on the board in the 38th after Giana Romano's cross was headed on by Olivia Russomanno into the Indiana six-yard box, where Girman took care of business for her second goal of the season.
  • Down 2-1 after halftime, Gia Vicari drew the match level in the 52nd following a long pass by Allison Lowrey got passed the Hoosier defense and goalkeeper for an open-net shot to tie it up at 2-2.
  • Indiana scored the game-winner after a long, forward pass in the air sprung a breakaway in the 85th minute.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
  • Becci Fluchel took a dangerous shot in the 32nd that forced a diving save to keep the Scarlet Knights off the board.
  • As Rutgers turned up the pressure with four shots on goal in the final 15 minutes of the first half, Russomanno challenged the Indiana keeper with an attempt on target in the 44th just before half.
  • The Rutgers defense allowed just one shot on goal in the second half, but it was the game-winner in the 85th.
