No. 14 Men’s Lacrosse Grabs Road Win at Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – No. 14 Rutgers men's lacrosse went on the road for the initial time in the 2024 season, and brought home a victory. The Scarlet Knights downed Stony Brook, 16-12, improving to 2-0 on the young season.

Rutgers' attack was boosted by eight total goal scorers, among them four different multi-goal scorers. Jack Aimone led the way, tying his career-high with four goals. Ross Scott had a game-high six points with three goals and three assists. Taynr Krummenacher also contributed a hat trick, alongside two goals from Shane Knobloch. John Sidorski, Nick Teresky, Colin Kurdyla and Cole Brams supplemented the scoring with a goal.

Rutgers won 21 of 32 faceoffs, with Cole Brams (13-of-20) and Matt Soutar (8-of-12) each contributing over 60%. RU held advantages in shots (43-41) and ground balls (41-29). Rutgers was 2-of-2 on extra-man and 14-of-16 clearing.

The Scarlet Knights caused nine turnovers. Tommy Mendyke (3 CT), Ben McKelvy (2 CT) and Shane Knobloch (2 CT) all had multiple caused turnovers, with the two defensemen (Mendyke and McKelvy) notching new career-highs in the category.

After no scoring in the first eight minutes of the game, Shane Knobloch broke through first, and Stony Brook shortly answered for a 1-1 tie. From there, Rutgers responded with a 6-0 scoring run over a nine-minute span, increasing the lead to 7-1 early in the second quarter. The Scarlet Knights led 9-2 after 23 minutes of game play. 

At halftime, RU held a 9-4 lead. Stony Brook would continue to try and push back, but the visitors continued to hold them at bay. Rutgers held leads of 13-6 and 14-12 before holding the home team off the scoreboard for the final 8:28 of the game to ensure the four-goal final margin of victory.

  • With the win, Rutgers improved to 9-6 all-time against Stony Brook, with three straight wins and four out of five wins in the series.
  • The Scarlet Knights improve to 2-0 to start the year for the ninth straight season, dating back to 2016.
  • Freshman Colin Kurdyla had his first collegiate points with a goal and an assist
  • Tanyr Krummenacher (thee goals) and Cole Brams (one goal) had their first Rutgers' goals
  • Andrew Macecha had a career-high five ground balls
  • Ross Scott's hat trick was the 13th of his career. He is now six goals from reaching 100 career goals.
  • Reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Week Cardin Stoller made nine saves.
