MIAMI, Fla. – Rutgers softball dropped a pair off contests with host FIU on day two of the Panther Invitational on Saturday.
FIU topped RU in game one, 4-3 and got past the Scarlet Knights in extra innings, 3-2, in bracket play in the No. 2 vs No. 3 game.
The Scarlet Knights dropped to 5-4 on the season.
FIU 4, Rutgers 3
- Morgan Smith went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.
- Kyleigh Sand was 1-for-3 with two runs and moved into a tie for fourth on the career stolen base leaders list.
- LA Matthews was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
- Mattie Boyd went 5.1 innings in her first loss of the season with two strikeouts.
- Rutgers took the lead with their first at-bat with Morgan Smith launching a two-run rocket to left.
- FIU tied the game in the bottom of the second capitalizing on a pair of Scarlet Knight errors. Abigail Brown led off and reached on a throwing error with a Makayla Navarro bunt and Bailey Gorssenbach ground out bringing the Panther home. Navarro scored three batters later off a Kaleena Downing single to center.
- The Panthers took a one-run lead in the next inning. Three singles pushed across Zamya McBurrows on Grossenbache's base hit to center, but Morgan Smith was able to fire the ball into home to stop another FIU from being put up on the scoreboard.
- The Scarlet Knights knotted the score at 3-3 in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Kyleigh Sand walked and took second on a stolen base tying her for fourth all-time on the Rutgers career stolen base leaders list. LA Matthews was able to get Sand home on a line drive that got past the Panthers' outstretched glove at second.
- FIU went back in front in the bottom of the sixth. The Panthers had the bases loaded for a Casey Goguts sacrifice fly to center to score the go-ahead run. Rutgers retired the side on the play as Jillian Anderson found Kyleigh Sand on the cutoff to fire home to stop another run from scoring.

- Morgan Smith made it back-to-back games a home run and added a double while tossing a complete game with four strikeouts. She was responsible for both RU's runs. She dropped to 2-2 in the circle.
- Morgan Smith started game two just like she did game one only this time it took two pitches for the senior Scarlet Knight to go over the wall. It was a solo shot to left for the early 1-0 RU advantage.
- FIU had a chance to add a run in the bottom of the fourth as they loaded the bases with one out. However, the Panthers were stranded leaving the hosts scoreless.
- Smith added another run in the sixth. With two outs, the Scarlet Knight doubled down the left field line, advanced to third on a throwing error and then scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 Rutgers lead.
- The Panthers got onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning. Makayla Navarro led off with a triple with Ashton Landsell following with an RBI single to left. FIU had runners in scoring position three batters later with the combo of Kyleigh Sand and Katie Wingert getting an out at home to prevent the tying run.
- A bases-loaded sacrifice fly tied up the ballgame in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. The Panthers were all aboard for a Navarro fly out to right and pinch runner Zamya McBurrows tagged up and scored from third to force extra innings.
- FIU's Collier Peaden walked it off on the eighth. A sac bunt moved Kaleena Downing, placed on second to start, over to third and she scored on Peaden's hit through the right side.
Rutgers softball will meet Army on Sunday at 9 a.m.
