MIAMI, Fla. – Rutgers softball closed out its trip to the Panther Invitational with a run-rule shutout of Army, 9-0, on Sunday morning.
Mattie Boyd got the win in the circle while Katie Wingert had hits on all three trips to the plate and knocked in a pair of runs.
The victory improved the Scarlet Knights to 6-4 on the year and ended the weekend 2-3.
- Katie Wingert was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. The Scarlet Knight catcher also posted her third double of the season.
- Kyleigh Sand collected a triple, two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases.
- Kobie Hura was also responsible for a pair of runs coming across home plate.
- Mattie Boyd tossed three innings with four strikeouts as she improved to 4-1 inside the circle.
- Rutgers took the lead with its first-at bat. Kyleigh Sand stole third and on the errant throw scored for the day's first run. Katie Wingert collected an RBI single with her base hit to right to score LA Matthews for a 2-0 edge after one inning of play.
- The Scarlet Knights tacked on four more the following inning. Maddie Lawson led off the inning with a single down the left field line and got onto third on a stolen base and groundout. LA Matthews grounded out to second but got the RBI with Lawson scoring on the play. RU's next three batters all posted RBI hits. A Kobie Hura single to left, Wingert double down the left field line and Jillian Anderson base hit up the middle brought three more runs across for Rutgers to go ahead 6-0.
- The game was put into a rain delay in the bottom of the third with the Scarlet Knights at the plate with two outs.
After a 39-minute rain delay, play resumed with a Kyleigh Sand triple to left and a 7-0 Rutgers lead.
- Laurelai DePew made her Scarlet Knight debut in the top of the fourth sending down a pair of Black Knights on strikes.
- Rutgers added two more in the bottom of the fourth from pinch hitters. With runners on the corners, Georgia Ingle's fielder's choice scored Kobie Hura and Lauren Punk singled to right-center for Jillian Anderson to score.
Rutgers softball returns to action beginning on February 22 at the Mary Nutter Tournament in Cathedral City, California. The Scarlet Knights will meet up with Hawaii, UC Riverside, LMU, Cal Poly, CSUN and BYU. Â
