Softball Drops Contest With Nevada And Rebounds With 10-1 Victory Over Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. – Rutgers softball split the final day of the Bulldog Invitational. After opening the day with a 7-3 setback to Nevada, the Scarlet Knights rebounded with a 10-1 victory over host Fresno State.

Rutgers finished the tournament 2-2 and moves to 15-9 as the Scarlet Knights continue its West Coast trip meeting up with soon-to-be Big Ten Conference member No. 16/18 UCLA along with a mid-week contest at Cal Baptist and three-game series at San Diego.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
THE RUNDOWN
  • Wolf Pack leadoff Chelie Senini gave her squad an early 1-0 lead after a half-inning. Senini walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single from Bridgette Gilliano.
  • Rutgers took the lead in the bottom of the second. The ball came out of the glove of Nevada's right fielder on Kayla Bock's fly ball to score Payton Lincavage to tie the game. Although Maddie Lawson hit into a double play with the next at-bat, Leilani Chavez was able to score giving RU a 2-1 lead.
  • Nevada took back the lead in their next at-bat. Three-straight RBI hits – an RBI double by Taryn Jenkins to left-center, Aalliyah Jenkins following with an RBI single to center and Haylee Engelbrecht coming up with another Wolf Pack RBI base hit – gave the Wolf Pack a 4-2 edge.
  • The Wolf Pack added to its lead in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Taryn Jenkins brought across two with a double to left for a 6-2 Nevada advantage.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
  • Mattie Boyd went the distance for the seventh time this season picking up five strikeouts.
  • Morgan Smith was 3-for-5 with three RBIs.
  • Katie Wingert and Lauren Punk both added two RBIs each. For Wingert, her double moved her into ninth in career doubles while both of Punk's runs batted in came in a six-run top of the seventh for the Scarlet Knights.
  • Kyleigh Sand and Jillian Anderson scored two runs apiece.
THE RUNDOWN
  • The contest opened with Kyleigh Sand notching her seventh career triple and second of the season and three batters later came home. Sand gave RU a 1-0 lead after a half-inning of play on an RBI single from the bat of Payton Lincavage.
  • Rutgers extended its lead in the fifth scoring two runs on no hits. The bases were loaded when Kobie Hura was hit by a pitch to send in LA Matthews and were still loaded when Katie Wingert walked to score Morgan Smith.
  • The Scarlet Knights took a 4-0 lead in the sixth. Jillian Anderson led off with a double. advanced on a single to left by Smith and scored on an error on the relay.
  • Fresno State foiled the shutout in the bottom of the inning. Smith attempted to make a hard-fought grab at the wall, but instead it led to a triple. With one Bulldog aboard, it led to an RBI for Lauren Almeida as RU headed into the final inning ahead 4-1.
  • RU exploded for six runs on four hits and two errors in the top of the seventh. The barrage of Scarlet Knights runs began with a Wingert sac bunt scoring Kobie Hura, who began the inning reaching on an error thru the legs of a Bulldog third baseman. Maddie Lawson followed with an RBI single to center. The bases were loaded two batters later as Lauren Punk entered the game to deliver a two-RBI single and Smith singled to short to add two more runs.

  •  The Rutgers softball team is back on the field to meet No. 16/18 UCA on Tuesday, March 12 with first pitch coming at 10 p.m. (ET).
