Women’s Lacrosse Loses Close Matchup with No. 6 Michigan

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers women's lacrosse (5-3, 0-2) lost a tight 13-10 Big Ten Conference matchup with No. 6 Michigan (9-0, 2-0), 13-10, on Thursday night at SHI Stadium. The Scarlet Knights scored the most goals against the undefeated Wolverines this season, but UM used a 16-10 advantage on the draw, 13 saves and a 6-0 scoring run in the second half to earn its ninth win of the season.

Graduate student Cassidy Spilis produced a team-high four goals and eight draw controls, while sophomore Alexa Corbin added her first-career hat trick with three goals off the bench. Classmate Ava Chiarella posted two goals to help pace RU's offense.

Rutgers took its first lead of the game at the 6:37 mark in the opening quarter after junior Emalie Clothier found a cutting Chiarella to make it 2-1 Scarlet Knights. Michigan added back-to-back goals before the end of the first quarter to regain its lead at 3-2.

The Wolverines added another score before Chiarella netted an unassisted score nine minutes into the second quarter to make it just 4-3 in favor of the visitor. Both teams traded offensive barbs down the stretch before Corbin's first goal of the night made it 6-4 Michigan at halftime.

The Scarlet Knights tied the game after they opened the second half with a quick 2-0 scoring run. Spilis scooped up a loose ball off the canvas and finished her second of the night, while Corbin weaved her way through the defense with 12:26 on the clock in the third quarter to tie the game at 6-6.

The Wolverines countered with a 6-0 scoring run bridged between the final two quarters. UM attacker Kaylee Dyer tallied the first and sixth goal of the run, with her sixth of the night putting Michigan up 12-6 with 11:53 to play.

Rutgers did not go away in the final minutes. Corbin sparked a 4-1 scoring run to end the game with her third goal off a free position attempted. Spilis followed with back-to-back scores to make it just a three-goal game, but Michigan put the game away with a score with just under two minutes to play.
