SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Rutgers softball opened its three-game series at San Diego on Thursday night with an extra-innings setback.
While the Scarlet Knights knotted the score up at in the top of the sixth, host San Diego scored the game-winning run in the bottom the eighth for a 3-2 victory.
The loss dropped RU to 16-11Â overall.
San Diego 3, Rutgers 2 (8 inn)
- Payton Lincavage scored both Scarlet Knight runs and collected a triple to move into a tie for sixth on the all-time list.
- Kayla Bock was 2-for-4 with an RBI double that scored Lincavage to tie the game at 2-2 in the sixth.
- Morgan Smith hurled a complete game but fell to 5-4 inside the circle. She struck out four along the way.
- In the top of the second, Rutgers loaded the bases and with two outs Kobie Hura entered the game to walk and score Payton Lincavage for the 1-0 lead.
- San Diego tied the ballgame up in the bottom of the inning. A pair of errors put Toreros into scoring position and wild pitch gave Amanda Limon the opportunity to score.
- The hosts went up by a run in the fifth. The Toreros had runners on first and second when Jennings hit a single to left to score pinch runner Lauren Asia.
- The Scarlet Knights, however, knotted the ball game back up in their next at-bat. Lincavage tripled off the wall in right and Kayla Bock blasted the ball to center for the RBI double.
- While RU was able to pickoff the Toreros extra-inning runner on second to start off the bottom of the eighth, San Diego's Tele Jenning was able to reach on an infield error. She scored the game-winning run after three wild pitches.
- The Rutgers-San Diego softball series continues on Friday, March 15 with first pitch set for 7 p.m. (ET).
