SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Rutgers softball evened its series with San Diego on Friday afternoon with a 13-2 victory over the Toreros in six innings.
The win, which saw
Mattie Boyd earn her 10th victory, five Scarlet Knights plate two runs and
Katie Wingert move into ninth all-time in doubles, improved RU to 17-11 on the season.
Rutgers 13, San Diego 2Â (6Â inn)
- Rutgers tied its season high for a third time this season with 14 hits, including four hits in the top of the sixth to score six runs.
- Morgan Smith led the way going 3-for-5 with a double, triple and two RBIs.
- Katie Wingert collected a pair of RBI doubles to move into ninth all-time "On The Banks" with 34 in her Scarlet Knight career.
- Kyleigh Sand and LA Matthews both posted two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored each.
- Kobie Hura knocked two runs in and scored twice.
- Kayla Bock added two hits and two runs as well.
- Mattie Boyd threw all six innings for her seventh complete game of the year improving to 10-5 overall. She struck out four Toreros along the way.
- The Scarlet Knights struck early. Kyleigh Sand led off, reaching on a bunt, and scored for the early 1-0 lead on a double to centerfield by LA Matthews. Matthews proceeded to give RU a 2-0 lead scoring on a double by Katie Wingert who bounced the ball off the top of the left-field wall.
- Rutgers plated three more in the third. Morgan Smith became the second Scarlet Knight to hit the top of the wall for a double and Payton Lincavage singled beating out a diving stop by the Toreros' third baseman to have two aboard for the Scarlet Knights. Wingert cracked the bat for her second double of the day scoring Lincavage for the inning's first run. After Kayla Bock was hit by a pitch the bases were loaded for Leilani Chavez to pick an RBI on a walk. Maddie Lawson followed with a sac fly to center for a 5-0 RU advantage.
- San Diego took advantage of a pair of miscues to get onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning. A failed pickoff allowed EJ Joyner to advance to second and she scored after Mikalyn Emanuelli reached on an error at first. Emanuelli scored two batters Iater as Amanda Limon got over the infield to into shallow right.
- The Scarlet Knights put two more on the scoreboard in the fifth to go ahead 9-2. With two outs and Kayla Bock in scoring position on third, Kobie Hura delivered a double down the right-field line and scored as Sand followed with a single up the middle.
- RU exploded for six runs in the sixth. Lincavage led off the top half with a walk and advanced on a single to right off the bat of Bock. With one out, Lauren Punk reached on a fielder's choice to core Lincavage. Megan Herka pinch hit next and singled to short to load the bases and runs came home on the next four Scarlet Knight at-bats. Hura was hit by a pitch, Sand added an RBI on a fielder's choice, LA Matthews singled to left-center and Morgan Smith wrapped up scoring with a two-run triple to right-center.
