Softball Falls 2-0 In Midweek Contest At Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Rutgers softball dropped a 2-0 decision to Virginia in a midweek contest at Palmer Park, the Scarlet Knights' final game before opening up home and Big Ten play this weekend.
The Cavaliers put up a run in the fourth and fifth innings while Mattie Boyd tossed a complete game for the Scarlet Knights racking up five strikeouts.
The loss dropped RU to 18-12 on the year as they get ready for conference play.

| STATISTICALLY SPEAKING |
- Mattie Boyd dropped to 10-6 overall inside the circle tossing six innings while sending five Cavaliers down on strikeouts. She gave up a pair of runs on four hits.
- Scarlet Knight hits came from the bats of Kyleigh Sand, Morgan Smith and Leilani Chavez.
- Defensively, Katie Wingert and Maddie Lawson connected to catch a pair of Cavaliers stealing.

- Rutgers managed to reach third in the top of the fourth. Payton Lincavage took a base after being hit by a pitch, stole second and reached third on a groundout by Kayla Bock. The Scarlet Knight however was stranded as Eden Bigham sent down the next two RU batters on strikes.
- Virginia broke the scoreless stalemate in the bottom half with a run. Macee Easton walked with two outs and Kelsey Hackett followed taking her full count to left for an RBI double.
- The Scarlet Knights had another chance at getting on the scoreboard as they loaded the bases in the fifth with two outs. The hosts, however, managed to keep all aboard and added a run in their turn at the plate.
- The Cavaliers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Leah Boggs led off with a double down the left field line and moved to third off a fielder's choice. Although Abby Weaver grounded out to second, Boggs was able to advance home on the play.

- Rutgers softball opens its home and Big Ten slate this weekend in a three-game series with Ohio State. The Scarlet Knights and Buckeyes square off on Friday, March 22 at 3 p.m., Saturday, March 23 at 3 p.m. and Sunday, March 24 at 1 p.m. at the Rutgers Softball Complex.
