Softball Topped By Purdue In Doubleheader

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Rutgers softball dropped both games on a doubleheader with Purdue to drop the series to the Boilermakers.

RU had early leads in both contests, but Purdue came back for a 6-5 extra-inning victory in game one and took the series with a 5-3 win in game two.

The losses drop the Scarlet Knights to 21-15 overall and 3-3 in Big Ten play.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
  • Mattie Boyd started the contest allowing no hits and no runs with only four Boilermakers reaching base.
  • Morgan Smith registered the loss to drop to 8-6 in the circle with two earned runs on three hits tossing the final 3.2 of the game. At the plate, she delivered her 12th home run of the season, a two-run shot to give RU a 2-0 edge after a half inning of play.
  • LA Matthews registered a pair of doubles and an RBI.
THE RUNDOWN
  • Morgan Smith crushed her first pitch of the day 220 feet over the wall in center field to give RU an early 2-0 lead.
  • Rutgers loaded the bases and added three more after four and a half. With all aboard, LA Matthews scored Maddie Lawson on a ground out and Jillian Anderson and Kyleigh Sand came home after Smith reached on an error.
  • Two errors, two stolen bases, four walks, a hit by pitch and only one Boilermaker hit was enough damage in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 5-5.
  • The contest went into extras where in the eighth Purdue was able to score the game-winning run on a fielding miscue.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
  • Morgan Smith collected her second home run of the day and 13th of the season. She currently ranks second in the league in home runs behind Minnesota's Jess Oakland with 14.
  • Smith got the start dropping to 8-6 throwing 2.1 innings with three strikeouts before Georgia Ingle tossed the final 3.2 allowing two hits and no runs.
  • Kyleigh Sand added an RBI with a sac fly.
  • Jillian Anderson was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
THE RUNDOWN
  • Rutgers was once again the team to strike first scoring the game's first run in the top of the third. A sac fly by Kyleigh Sand brought home Jillian Anderson and two batters later Morgan Smith delivered her second home run of the afternoon. Her two-run shot over the wall in left-center gave RU a 3-0 edge.
  • The hosts, however, came back with five runs in the bottom half. Back-to-back Boilermakers were hit at the plate with the bases loaded to plate a pair of runs and scoring continued with  a two-RBI single up the middle from Ryen Ross and an RBI base hit by Olivia McFadden.
PURDUE SERIES NOTES
  • Morgan Smith finished the second Big Ten weekend batting .375 (3-for-8) with two home runs, four RBIs and three runs. She made three appearances in the circle tossing 13.0 innings with 11 striekouts holding opponents to a .188 batting average.
  • Jillian Anderson was also .375 from the plate (3-for-8) with two runs scored.
  • LA Matthews batted .333 (3-for-9) with two doubles, two runs score and an RBI.

  • Rutgers softball begins a four-game homestand next week. The Scarlet Knights will welcome Hofstra on Wednesday, April 3 at 1 p.m. and Wisconsin for a three-game series on Friday, April 5 at 3 p.m., Saturday, April 6 at noon on BTN and Sunday, April 7 at 1 p.m. Admission for all home games is free.
