Morgan Smith Becomes Softball's Single-Season RBI Leader In Doubleheader Sweep Of Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – A Payton Lincavage sac fly scored LA Matthews for the game-winning run in a 7-6 victory in game one and it was a 9-0 run-rule win in game two as Rutgers softball swept Maryland for the second-straight season.

Morgan Smith became RU's single-season RBI leader with 10 RBIs thanks in part to a grand slam and three-run home run in the series. Mattie Boyd got the save in game one and a complete game win behind 5 Ks in game two.

The two wins at the Maryland Softball Stadium improved the Scarlet Knights to 25-16 overall and 7-4 in Big Ten action.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
  • Payton Lincavage's sac fly in the top of the seventh plated LA Matthews for the game-winning run.
  • Morgan Smith was 2-for-3 with five RBIs off a two-run double and a three-run home run.
  • Georgia Ingle got the victory to improve to 2-2 allowing one earned run on three hits, while Mattie Boyd got the save striking out two of the three batters faced in the seventh.
THE RUNDOWN
  • The host Terps got onto the board in the bottom of the first with a 2-0 lead on a Diamond Williams RBI single and Jaeda McFarland scoring off a wild pitch.
  • Rutgers, however, came back with four runs in the third off only one hit. The bases were loaded for an LA Matthews ground out to score Jillian Anderson and Morgan Smith followed with a blast over the wall to center to give the Scarlet Knights a 4-2 edge.
  • Maryland came back to knot the score at 4-4 as McFarland and Williams connected for back-to-back home runs to lead off the bottom of the third.
  • Smith smacked the ball off the center wall for a double in the fifth scoring Kyleigh Sand and Matthews to put RU back in front 6-4.
  • In the bottom of the inning, the Terps tied the game up once again. McFarland led off with a solo shot to right center and a field miscue allowed Mazie MacFarlane to score.
  • Matthews got herself into scoring position in the top of the seventh on a fielder's choice, wild pitch and passed ball and came home for the go-ahead run tagging up as Payton Lincavage flew out to center with the ninth pitch of her at-bat.
  • Mattie Boyd entered the circle for the Terps' final trip to the plate striking out two for her second save of the year.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
  • Morgan Smith delivered a grand slam and collected five more RBIs to become the single-season RBI leader.
  • Kyleigh Sand, LA Matthews and Payton Lincavage each scored twice with Matthews also posting a double.
  • Mattie Boyd tossed her 13th complete game and second complete-game shutout of the year to improve to 14-6 inside the circle. She fanned five Terps and allowed only three hits.
THE RUNDOWN
  • Rutgers opened with four runs on three hits and never looked back. Kyleigh Sand kicked the game off with a single and LA Matthews followed with a double. Morgan Smith, who leads the Big Ten in sac flies, used her sixth of the year to score Sand for the game's first and Matthews came home on a Terp fielding miscue. Later in the inning with runners on the corners, Kayla Bock went thru the right side of the Maryland defense to add another two runs.  
  • Another Maryland miscue allowed the Scarlet Knights to up their advantage to 5-0 at the end of three and a half.
  • A pair of walks and a base hit loaded the bases for Smith to clear the bases taking a 0-1 count deep to left extending RU's lead to 9-0. 
SERIES NOTES
  • Morgan Smith finished the series 4-for-5 with a double, two home runs and 10 RBIs. She surpassed Jackie Bates (2015) as RU's single-season RBIs leader and upped her total to 57 on the year.
  • LA Matthews batted .429 with four runs scored, a double and RBI.
  • Kyleigh Sand also scored four runs upping her total to 45 on the season.
  • Altogether, Mattie Boyd struck out seven across six innings holding the Terps to a .158 batting average.
