PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers men's lacrosse redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Cardin Stoller was bestowed two weekly awards from the Big Ten Conference office following his outstanding performance in leading RU to a 9-7 road win at No. 15 Michigan last Sunday. Stoller was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week and the Big Ten Specialist. Stoller has now won Big Ten Freshman of the Week four times and Big Ten Specialist of the Week twice.
Stoller matched his career-high with 19 saves between the pipes in Ann Arbor. Behind his efforts, RU held Michigan, who entered the game with the number 2 scoring offense in the league at 13.9 goals per game, to just seven goals, seven below their average. It was Michigan's season-low in goals and fewest goals scored by UM in 34 games (since March 19, 2022), and fewest in a home game over the past 23 home games (since 2021).
The 19 saves for the Owings Mills, Md. native matched Rutgers' Big Ten record for saves in a game, last done in 2021, and only done twice previously in Big Ten play, both by Colin Kirst against Michigan. It was the most saves in a Big Ten game for any goalkeeper since 2022. Stoller is the only Big Ten goalkeeper to have more than 17 saves in a game this season.
The Boys Latin product posted a save percentage of 73.1%. That marked his second best this season when playing a full game. Prior to this season, only twice since 2015 had a RU goalkeeper played the full game and had a save percentage of 70% or better. Stoller has now done it twice this season. Stoller also held Michigan to a scoring drought over 25 minutes between the first and third quarters, allowing RU to turn a 2-2 game to a 7-2 lead that the Scarlet Knights would never relinquish.
This marks the second time this season that Stoller has been named the winner of two Big Ten awards, garnering recognition as both the top freshman and the top specialist. In the first nine seasons of Big Ten men's lacrosse, that feat had only been accomplished twice previously (Logan Callahan, JHU, April 19, 2022 and Brian Ruppel, Maryland, March 21, 2023). Stoller has matched the amount of times it was done already through 10 weeks of his debut campaign, also earning both recognitions following a 19-save performance in a win over UMass.
The win was Rutgers' first ranked win of the season, first league win of the season and ninth straight win over Michigan. The Scarlet Knights stand at 7-4 overall and 1-2 in Big Ten play ahead of a trip this weekend to No. 4/5 Maryland on Saturday (7 p.m., BTN).
