Chris Gotterup Wins 1st PGA Tour Event at Myrtle Beach Classic

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Former Scarlet Knight and PGA Tour professional golfer Chris Gotterup made history on Sunday.
The Little Silver, N.J. native became the first Scarlet Knight to win a PGA Tour event in school history in his 27th career start this weekend at the Myrtle Beach Classic. Gotterup, who competed for RU from 2017-20, finished 22-under-par 262 for a six-shot victory at Dunes Golf and Beach Club in South Carolina.
"I couldn't have been prouder to watch Chris along with the rest of Rutgers Nation this weekend," Rutgers men's golf coach Rob Shutte said. "It's been so much fun to see his development as a person from 2017 to his time here at Rutgers and now he's developed into a world-class player in such a short amount of time."
The victory secured a $720,000 prize for the 24-year-old and a two-year PGA Tour exemption earning him a spot in next week's PGA Championship at Valhalla. He also will be able to compete in the 2025 Players Championship and the Sentry with this victory.
"I felt good, like better than I thought I would feel coming out of the gates even though I made two bogeys," Gotterup said in a PGA postgame interview. "Kind of a crappy putt on the first hole and a really tough two-putt on the next. Then to bounce back the way I did, it's just kind of how I roll."
Gotterup closed the final day with a four-under-par 67 to secure the win. Gotterup sunk a clutch birdie put from 15 feet on hole 16 to create a six-shot advantage on Sunday. He then closed out his performance with another birdie on the final hole as his parents and brother watched along. The former 2020 Big Ten Player of the Year at RU is the first Jersey Shore native to win the event since 1948.
"I think for Chris moving forward, this is just the beginning," Shutte said of his former Scarlet Knight. "We are just really proud of him and how he continues to represent himself, his family, and New Jersey out there on the PGA Tour."
"No matter what tournament or what my game feels like, I'm going to grind it out," Gotterup said. "That's kind of how I've always been."
