SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – Rutgers women's golf wrapped up its second event of the season with a t-4th finish at the Cardinal Cup on Sunday, shooting an 885 (291-297-297) at the University of Louisiville Golf Club.
The Scarlet Knights were led by a pair of top-five finishes, with junior
Grace Lu tying for second place and freshman
Joline Truong tying for fifth. .
"While this wasn't the finish we were looking for, it was still a strong weekend for us," head coach
Kari Williams said. "It's important to have these experiences at the top of a leaderboard and to learn how to handle the pressure. Grace had a great tournament and Joline was consistent again for us. We have two weeks before our next event to practice and get ready to compete again."
Round 3 – Sunday, September 15th
Weather: Sunny, Temps in 70s, 10-20 mph winds
After three consecutive bogies to start the round, Lu rebounded and closed out her round with two birdies and 12 pars in her final 15 holes to post a 2-over 74 in the final round. She finished the tournament in a tie for second with a 1-under 215 (69-72-74), finishing two strokes back of the event winner.
Truong now has back-to-back top-10 finishes to start her collegiate career, earning her first career top-five with a t-5th finish on Sunday. She had four more birdies in her final round, bringing her total to the event for nine, finishing at 2-over 218 (72-73-73).
Lucrezia Rossettin closed out the weekend strong with a 1-under 71 in the final round. She collected her second eagle of the tournament on the par-4 second on Sunday, adding a pair of birdies on the back nine to propel her to her best round. Rossettin finished just outside the top-20 at t-21st with an 8-over 224 (75-78-71).
Krystal Li finished the tournament in t-38th with a 14-over 230 (75-76-79) and
Lorena Rossettin rounded out the competitors with a t-70th finish at 23-over 239 (83-76-80).
Round 2 – Saturday, September 14th
Weather: Sunny, Temps in high-70s, 10-20 mph winds
Lu put together another strong round to maintain her lead with one round remaining, shooting an even-par 72 to remain at 3-under (69-72) for the weekend. Her second round featured back-to-back birdies on No. 5 and 6 and 14 pars on the day.
"Today the course played a little tougher but we hung in there this afternoon," head coach
Kari Williams said. "Grace and Joline put together good rounds for us again. We've put ourselves in a good position to go out tomorrow and compete for the title."
Freshman
Joline Truong climbed up into the top-five after shooting a 1-over 73 in her second round and is now tied for third at 1-over for the tournament. Like Lu, she also birdied No. 5 and 6 to highlight her round.
Krystal Li sits just outside in the top-20 in a tie for 26th after a 4-over 76 on Saturday. She rolled in birdies on No. 11 and 16 and is at 7-over for the event.
Lucrezia Rossettin shot a 6-over 78 in her second round, having the highlight of the day with an eagle on No. 11 and is now in a tie for 34th at 9-over for the tournament.
Lorena Rossettin was able to rebound after her second round, improving by seven strokes with a 4-over 76. She moved into a tie for 67th and is now at 15-over.
Round 1 – Friday, September 13th
Weather: Overcast, Temps in 70s, 10-20 mph winds
Grace Lu opened the tournament with the best round of her Scarlet Knight career, firing a 3-under 69 that featured four birdies and 13 pars. He score has her leading the event by one stroke heading into the final round.
"My driver was consistent today and that gave me confidence," Lu said. "I tried to stay patient and took it one hole at a time. Compared to last week, I definitely felt more comfortable on the course and I'll keep that momentum going into tomorrow's round."
Freshman
Joline Truong continues her strong play to open her collegiate career, posting an even-par 72 to sit in a tie for seventh. She rolled in a trio of birdies and was 1-under on the front nine.
Lucrezia Rossettin and
Krystal Li matched eachother with 3-over 75 on the day, good for a tie for 21st. Rossettin had three birdies, including back-to-back on No. 8 and 9 to close out her front nine. Li had three bridies of her own and played the back nine at even-par.
"We got off to a bit of a slow start in the rain this morning but the team dug in and took advantage of the scoring holes out here," head coach
Kari Williams said. "The wind picked up but we stuck to our game plan and they managed themselves well. We'll look to start round two with confidence from our play today."
Lorena Rossettin rounded out the RU competitors with an 11-over 83 in her first round of the season.
