LANE STADIUM • BLACKSBURG, VA.
SEPTEMBER 21, 2024 • ATTENDANCE: 65,632

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Rutgers football (3-0) went on the road and earned a 26-23 victory over Virginia Tech (2-2) at a sold-out Lane Stadium on Saturday afternoon. PK Jai Patel drilled a 24-yard field goal with 1:56 remaining to put the Scarlet Knights ahead, while DB Robert Longerbeam intercepted Hokies' quarterback Kyron Drones on the following possession to secure the non-conference win.

With the win, RU has started 3-0 for the fourth consecutive season under head coach Greg Schiano and has won its last 10 non-conference games.

QB Athan Kaliakmanis threw for a season-high 269 yards, RB Sam Brown V rushed for 60 yards and two touchdowns, RB Kyle Monangai rushed for 86 yards with a touchdown and WR Ian Strong totaled a career-high 110 receiving yards.

DL Wesley Bailey collected a sack for a safety in the first half and Longerbeam had the game-clinching interception in his home state.

FIRST QUARTER
Rutgers' special teams made a big play early in the game, with LB Abram Wright recovering a fumble on a punt deep inside Hokie territory. On the ensuing drive, Monangai rushed in from one-yard out for his fifth touchdown of the season to put RU up, 7-0. After forcing another Virginia Tech punt, Brown V carried the ball five straight times for 27 yards, including a three-yard touchdown to make it 14-0.

SECOND QUARTER
The Hokies responded with a 23-yard rushing touchdown from Bhayshul Tuten to make it 14-7. Later in the quarter with Virginia Tech backed up against its end zone, Bailey collected his first sack of the season for a safety to put RU ahead 16-7, which would hold as the halftime score.

THIRD QUARTER
Brown added his second touchdown of the game with a five-yard score on the opening drive of the third quarter, giving the Scarlet Knights a 23-7 lead. His touchdown was the lone score of the frame and RU has now outscored opponents 35-7 in the third quarter this season.

FOURTH QUARTER
Virginia Tech put together a pair of touchdown drives to ultimately tie the game in the fourth. A 14-yard rushing score from Tuten and two-point conversion made it 23-15 with 14:06 left. Tuten scored his third touchdown of the game later in the quarter and with the successful conversion, the Hokies tied the game at 23-23 with 4:35 remaining.

Kaliakmanis found Strong for a 63-yard gain on the first play of the next possession to set up the offense in the red zone. Patel delivered the decisive score with a 24-yard field goal to make it 26-23.

Three plays into the Hokies' next drive, Longerbeam jumped up to deflect a pass from Drones and grabbed the ball for an interception with 1:24 remaining. Monangai would rush for a pair of first downs and force Virginia Tech to use up its timeout, allowing Kaliakmanis to kneel out the victory.
