Kaliakmanis found Strong for a 63-yard gain on the first play of the next possession to set up the offense in the red zone. Patel delivered the decisive score with a 24-yard field goal to make it 26-23.Â
Three plays into the Hokies' next drive, Longerbeam jumped up to deflect a pass from Drones and grabbed the ball for an interception with 1:24 remaining. Monangai would rush for a pair of first downs and force Virginia Tech to use up its timeout, allowing Kaliakmanis to kneel out the victory.Â
