Tennis Defeats NJIT For Second Straight Sweep

EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. – The Rutgers women's tennis team (2-1, 0-0 B1G) swept NJIT (0-1, 0-0 SLC), 7-0 Friday afternoon.
"NJIT battled hard today," said head coach Hilary Ritchie. "This was a good test for our team. We played bravely in the big points and it worked to our advantage."
The Scarlet Knights won two straight doubles matches to take the doubles point before winning all six singles matches.
"I didn't play my best tennis today, but I stayed calm mentally and felt strength from the team," said co-captain Kim. "We were all fighting on every court. Even though I didn't play my best, we all pulled though and got the win, so I'm proud of that."
Doubles
Zeynep Ilker and Zuzanna Frankowska made quick work of Paula Menendez Alvarez and Arina Babkova winning 6-2.
Minchae Kim and Karina Jumazhanova then defeated Petra Koszo and Shalom Salvi to clinch the doubles point for RU.
Singles
Co-captain Jackie Lopez took on Babkova and won in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
Jumazhanova then beat Salvi 6-2, 6-4 on court No. 5 to put the Scarlet Knights within one of the win.
Ilker then clinched the win, defeating Irene Cocero 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.
After losing her first set 3-6, Naomi Karki came storming back 6-2, 6-4 to take the match against Feyza Aydin.
Nguyen then piled on beating Laura Wipfli 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 at the singles No. 1 position.
With all eyes on Kim, she pulled through to clinch the sweep against Menendez Alvarez, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 10-7.
