Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Adams Records 1,000 Career Points as Women's Basketball Setback at RV Minnesota

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers women's basketball (8-8, 0-5 B1G) dropped a 76-50 decision to Minnesota (16-1, 4-1 B1G) Wednesday night on the road. The Golden Gophers are currently receiving votes in both the AP poll and USA TODAY Sports women's basketball coaches poll.

Destiny Adams was the bright spot for the Scarlet Knights, as she secured her seventh double-double of the season with 28 points and 12 rebounds. She also recorded her 1,000th career point in the third quarter.

How it Happened

  • Awa Sidibe got Rutgers on the board first, with a long two to take an early lead. However, Minnesota came back with eight consecutive points to take the six-point edge and force an RU timeout at the 6:53 mark.
  • Destiny Adams came out of the break full force, netting a layup and two free throws to put the contest back within two points.
  • However, the Golden Gophers did not let up either, scoring four more just under the quarter's halfway point.
  • Each team added a three in the following minutes to keep the six-point difference, 15-9.
  • Adams pulled up for a jumper with under a minute to go but Minnesota hit a buzzer beater to end the opening quarter ahead, 19-11.
  • The Gophers continued to produce on offense, recording another five straight points to start the second period.
  • RU answered however with a seven-point stretch their own including a Mya Petticord deep ball, a reverse layup from Adams and two shots at the line from Sidibe. The home team stayed in front at the 4:58 media timeout however, 29-17.
  • Out of the pause, UM hit another five points, but Chyna Cornwell disrupted the flow with a contested layup.
  • Minnesota cashed in on another three and a fast break layup though, to force the Scarlet Knights' second timeout. The opposition remained in control. 39-19, with under two minutes to play.
  • The two teams continued to trade buckets to end the opening half, but Minnesota still went into the locker room with the 41-23 lead.
  • The Gophers recorded two threes in the opening minutes of the third quarter, but Adams and Sidibe each added field goals.
  • Adams hit a jumper at the 5:56 mark for her 1,000th career point. The historic bucket cut the difference to 19 points before the media timeout.
  • Both teams went back and forth on the floor with just over a minute to play. Petticord hit her first three of the contest, but the Gophers answered with a score of their own.
  • Adams cashed in on a three-point-play to end the third with UM on top, 55-37.
  • Minnesota kept up its momentum with six points in the opening three minutes of play. JoJo Lacey recorded a long jumper to put Rutgers on the board and make the score, 61-39.
  • Adams followed up with another three-point play but the Golden Gophers continued to sprinkle in scores to stay on top at the 5:00 media timeout, 66-42.
  • Petticord added a free throw while Adams came up with a steal and a score to keep the team going with just over two minutes to play.
  • UM piled on the remaining minutes to come away with the 76-50 victory.

Knights Notes

  • Adams becomes the 38th player in program history to reach the 1,000th point mark. Rutgers head coach Coquese Washington has had one player hit the 1,000-point milestone since she arrived at "On The Banks," with Kai Carter (2022-23) and Kassondra Brown (2023-24).
  • Adams finished with a 28-point, 12-rebound double-double, her seventh of the season and 15th of her career. She has now registered four 20+ point double-doubles.
  • Awa Sidibe shined on defense, pacing RU with both four steals to tie her career best and a new all-time high of three blocks. Adams also contributed three steals and two blocks.
  • Petticord recorded five assists, her season high and one off her career best.

Looking Ahead

Rutgers will come back to Jersey Mike's Arena for Letterwinner & National Girls and Women in Sports Day against Nebraska on Sunday, Jan. 12. The contest, presented by Shoprite, will tip off at 2 p.m.
