NCAA Championships Session III: Three Advance to Blood Round

PHILADELPHIA – Three from No. 11 Rutgers wrestling – Dean Peterson (125), Dylan Shawver (133) and Joseph Olivieri (141) – advanced to the Blood Round after Session III of the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships on Friday in Philadelphia.
 
Session IV of the championships begins at 8 p.m. and will broadcast on ESPN2, with all six mats streamed on ESPN+. All three Scarlet Knights are one victory away from All-America laurels and top eight finishes. Shawver looks to return to the podium for the second consecutive season, while Olivieri and Peterson attempt to earn All-America status for the first time in their respective careers.
 
No. 16 seed Shane Cartagena-Walsh (184) and No. 16 seed Yaraslau Slavikouski (HWT) both won their first matches of the afternoon session before losing overtime decisions in their second bouts to bow out of the tournament at the Wells Fargo Center. No. 19 seed Andrew Clark (149) also wrapped up action at NCAAs after a loss in his first consolation match.
 
With three in the Blood Round, Rutgers is 24th in the team race with 12.0 points.

Peterson lost his quarterfinal match with No. 4 seed Vincent Robinson (NC State) after pinning defending national champion Richard Figueroa (Arizona State) the night prior. Robinson used a takedown in the second period en route to the 4-2 final, dropping Peterson to the Blood Round.
 
Olivieri and Shawver followed with two victories to advance to the night session. After he defeated No. 9 seed Braxton Brown (Maryland) in sudden victory, Shawver faced No. 15 seed Anthony Noto (Lock Haven) in his third-round consolation bout. Tied 6-6 after sudden victory, Shawver earned an escape in the first tiebreaker, then followed with a takedown in the second for a 9-5 decision.
 
Olivieri looked strong in both of his matches during the morning session, defeating No. 16 seed Wyatt Henson (Lehigh) by 5-2 decision before landing two takedowns against No. 26 seed Eligh Rivera (Princeton) en route to a 7-2 final.
 
Cartagena-Walsh and Slavikouski both earned wins in their first matches of the day, as Cartagena-Walsh defeated No. 18 seed Max Hale (Penn) while Slavikouski downed No. 18 Lance Runyon (Northern Iowa) with a 4-3 decision. However, both lost in sudden victory to their respective opponents to finish their tournaments 2-2.
