PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Following a historic victory over No. 2 Maryland, Rutgers men's lacrosse had three student-athletes earn Big Ten Weekly awards.
Ryan Splaine was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week,
Colin Zeller was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, and
Cardin Stoller was named the Big Ten Specialist of the Week. It is the first career Big Ten weekly award for Splaine and Zeller, while Stoller earns his third career Specialist of the Week award.
Splaine and Stoller contributed to a stout defensive performance for the Scarlet Knights. Holding Maryland to a season-low in goals and 5.5 goals below their season average, it was the fewest goals allowed by RU in a Big Ten game since 2019. The six goals tied for the lowest goal total against while playing a ranked team for RU since 2017 and was the lowest total goals against in a conference game this season. Maryland was 0-of-3 on the extra-man despite having no. 2 man-up offense in league entering at 44% conversions.
Splaine excelled from his long-stick midfield spot, holding Maryland's top two midfielders without a goal despite both entering with over 100 career goals. The Rockville, Md. native had three ground balls and a caused turnover. On the season, Splaine had 39 ground balls and 14 caused turnovers, approaching career-highs in each category.
Zeller led the offense with three goals. The Haverford, Pa. native had his first career hat trick and third career multi-goal game. The redshirt freshman helped RU get out to a 5-1 lead with two first quarter goals, then had a crucial fourth quarter tally to help RU pull away. On the season, Zeller has 10 goals, two assists and 12 ground balls. He became the third different Scarlet Knight to be named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week this season, joining
JJ Aiello (twice) and
Haydn Sommer.
Stoller excelled between the pipes for Rutgers in backstopping the team to the victory. Also named the National Player of the Week by multiple publications, the Owing Mills, Md. native made 14 saves, with 11 of those in the final 45 minutes to shut down the Terps offense. Additionally, he scooped four ground balls, caused a turnover, then helped his own caused with his second goal of the season, with a full-field strike to put the game away in the fourth quarter.
