No. 16 Field Hockey Shuts Out Vermont

Winter and Kuiper Score, Nicholls Has Eight Saves in 2-0 Win

BURLINGTON, Vermont - No. 16 Rutgers field hockey completed an opening weekend sweep on Sunday afternoon, grabbing a 2-0 road win at the University of Vermont. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Emily Nicholls made eight saves against the reigning America East champions to stretch RU's record to 2-0 after the first two contests in 2025. Puck Winter and Sophie Kuiper were the goal scorers for RU.

On the game, RU had a 12-11 advantage in shots, while earning eight penalty corners to the hosts three.

The contest remained scoreless through the opening 30 minutes of play. The visitors then came out of the intermission on the attack, with the Scarlet Knights tallying both of the game's goals in the third stanza.

In the 33rd minute of action, RU earned a pair of penalty corners, and then following action there were awarded a penalty stroke. Puck Winter stepped up to the spot for the Scarlet Knights and buried the chance over the goalkeeper's right shoulder for a 1-0 lead.

RU scored again just five minutes later. This time, it was Sophie Kuiper who tallied the goal, finishing off a score. Olivia de Zwaan sent a great ball down the left side to Olivia Fraticelli to start the play. Fraticelli then centered a pass across the goal for Kuiper to hammer home.

That gave RU a two goal advantage, which the Scarlet Knights' defense locked down for the team's first shutout victory of the season. Nicholls had five of her eight saves in the second half to secure the victory.

The goalkeeping from Emily Nicholls was outstanding today. This coming weekend will be a great test for the squad as we travel to Columbus to face a pair of ACC teams."
