PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers men's golf team opened its fall season with the 8th annual Hackberry Invitational, a staple on the program's calendar that brings together players, alumni, and supporters in a laid-back yet competitive setting.
This year's event drew 160 golfers and 26 alumni, marking a notable increase from last year's attendance. Head coach Rob Shutte praised the strong turnout, especially given the early start time.
"This is an incredible day and event," said Shutte. "Following a double-shotgun, blackout game at night, the energy here is definitely off the charts."
While the Hackberry Invitational emphasizes camaraderie over standings, it remains a valuable opportunity for the Scarlet Knights to sharpen their skills ahead of fall competition. The event highlights not only the team's talent on the course but also the strong sense of community surrounding the program.
"Having the guys engage with alumni, guests, and supporters is super important," Shutte added. "To shake hands, build connections, and really interact with everyone—it's a great time."
Among the participants was former Genesis Scottish Open champion Chris Gotterup, whose presence added inspiration and perspective, linking Hackberry tradition with professional success.
This year's Invitational showcased the Scarlet Knights' ability to connect with the program's extended family while building momentum for the season.
