Shawver Picks Up 100th Career Victory in Dual with No. 13 Michigan

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 17 Rutgers wrestling (6-4, 0-2) lost to No. 13 Michigan (6-2, 2-0), 21-12, on Friday night in front of 4,127 fans at Jersey Mike's Arena.
No. 18 Remy Cotton (197) and No. 27 Ayden Smith (125) picked up ranked decisions, while No. 26 Dylan Shawver (133) secured the 100th win of his collegiate career. Andrew Barbosa (165) also added a decision in the 6-4 match split with the Wolverines.
Shawver became the 18th wrestler in program history to hit 100 career victories thanks to his 4-1 decision over Gauge Botero. A 2024 All-American and 2024 Big Ten Champion, Shavwer is 12-5 during his final collegiate season 'On the Banks.'
I thought we wrestled tough tonight, said head coach Scott Goodale. [Michigan] is a really good team, but I thought we wrestled hard. We just need to get better in some spots, and I think we will moving forward.
With a match start at 157 pounds, No. 33 Anthony White lost by major decision, as Michigan took a quick 4-0 lead. Barbosa countered thanks to a 6-2 decision over Justin Gates, landing takedowns in the first and third periods to make it just 4-3 through two bouts.
The Wolverines won back-to-back bouts at 174 and 184 pounds by major decision, taking a 12-3 lead before Cotton faced No. 20 Hayden Walters. With the score tied 1-1 and just under a minute left on the clock, Cotton countered a single-leg attempt from Walters, working around to finish for a takedown and a 4-1 decision.
No. 20 Hunter Catka (HWT) wrestled tough against No. 8 Taye Ghadiali, landing a takedown in the third period to lose by 7-5 decision. Michigan took a 15-6 lead into the midpoint.
Smith and Shawver kept things interesting out of the break. Tied 1-1 late in the third period against No. 19 Diego Sotelo, Smith finished a double for a takedown and a 3-1 win. The decision was the highest-ranked win of his career. Shawver followed with a 4-1 decision over Botero, as his 100th-career victory made it just a 15-12 advantage for the Wolverines with two matches to go.
Mason Gibson (141) made things interesting in his first Big Ten Conference start of the season against two-time All-American Dylan Ragusin. Gibson landed a big overthrow early for a takedown and held a lead in the third period before Ragusin held on for the 6-4 win.
No. 30 Andrew Clark wrestled well against No. 13 Lachlan McNeil, losing by just 4-2 decision as Michigan left with a 21-12 dual win.
