Frankowska Guides Tennis To Win Over NJIT

NEWARK, N.J. — Rutgers tennis defeated NJIT, 5-2, to move to 1-1 on the season Friday afternoon at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility. The Scarlet Knights won the doubles point and clinched the match with four straight-set victories led by Zuzanna Frankowska, Naomi Karki, Stella Schmitz and Savannah Cohen.
"This was a solid win," said head coach Hilary Ritchie. "NJIT came out quickly and aggressive in doubles. We did a good job of ramping up our intensity in key moments. It was great to have Stella and Savannah win convincingly at #5 and #6. We're going to take this momentum and prepare for Delaware."
Doubles
RU claimed the doubles point for the second match of the season behind wins from Mai Nguyen and Frankowska who won their match 7-5. The pairing of Cindy Zhou and Zeynep Ilker resulted in a 6-2 victory for the Scarlet Knights heading into singles play.
Singles
Frankowska earned the first singles point for the Scarlet Knights defeating Paula Menendez Alvarez 6-2, 6-1. In her first singles appearance of the season, Karki added a point with a 6-2, 6-4 victory. Freshmen Stella Schmitz and Savannah Cohen added straight-set wins to clinch the match and push the final score to 5-2.
Schmitz won 6-1, 6-2 over Petra Koszo, while Cohen 6-1, 6-1 in her match to defeat Diana Fernandes.
