About Rutgers

The Scarlet Knights are coming off a strong showing at their season-opening Rutgers Invitational last weekend, where they had 14 first-place finishes and 28 top-three finishes over two days. The weekend was highlighted with the opening swim, where Rutgers set a pool record in the 200 Freestyle Relay. Lena Bauer, Emilianna Gonzalez, Anna Vlachou and Journei Webster combined for a 1:30.34, just 0.01 seconds off the school record set in 2020.

Rutgers had strong performances from both returners and newcomers. Anna Vlachou won the 100 Free and finished second in the 100 Fly and the 100 Free. Ana Hazlehurst won the 200 and 400 IM. Emilianna Gonzalez won the 50 Free and Sofia Bartoloni won both the 100 and 200 Breast.

Rutgers saw six different top-three performances from Scarlet Knights who were competing in their first collegiate meet. That included Florence Robitaille's win in the 200 Back and Grace Sorensen taking the 200 Butterfly.

On the diving side, Rutgers took the top four spots on 1-Meter on Saturday, led by Katerina Hoffman's winning score of 311.60. The squad also went 1-2-3 on 3-Meter, with Bailee Sturgill finishing first.

About the Opponents

Liberty enters the weekend after splitting their season opening tri-meet against Penn State (240-111 win) and Virginia Tech (240-113) in Blacksburg. The Lady Flames, led by 17th-year head coach Jake Shellenberger, were voted second in the American Conference preseason poll after winning seven straight conference titles between 2019 and 2025. They are an affiliate AAC member since 2025 in swimming and diving. Their win over PSU was their first win over a Big Ten team since 2013 at Michigan State.

James Madison, under head coach Dane Pedersen, also competes in the American Conference. They were voted sixth in the preseason AAC poll, also joining the league with Liberty for last season. This will be their first meet of the season.

Up Next

Rutgers returns home on Friday, Oct. 30, to host Princeton at 6 pm at the Rutgers Aquatics Center, then travels to Charlotte, N.C., on Nov. 6-7 for a meet with Queens and Vanderbilt.
