Gonzalez Earns Bronze Medal in 50 Free at USA Swimming Speedo Junior National Championships

Irvine, Calif. – Rutgers rising sophomore Emilianna Gonzalez and incoming freshman Journei Webster excelled in the 50 Freestyle to highlight Rutgers performers at the US Junior Nationals. On Friday night, Emilianna Gonzalez had a bronze medal performance, earning her spot on the podium with a third-place finish in the A Final. Gonzalez, who entered the race as the top seed with the fastest prelim time, swam a 25.51 at night to earn the bronze. Gonzalez was just .13 off of first place and just .01 seconds behind second place. Journei Webster had a 15th place finish with a 26.50 in the B Finals.
In the prelims for the 50 Free, Gonzalez touched the wall the fastest, doing so in 25.52 to earn the top seed in the evening's A Final. In the same event during the morning session, incoming freshman Journei Webster swam a 26.19 to place 15th in prelims and qualify for the B Finals. She finished in seventh place in her B Final race on Friday night.
Gonzalez and Webster represented two of the three Scarlet Knights competing at the event at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center. Grace Sorensen also competed alongside the duo, as she swam Monday in the 200 Butterfly.
Gonzalez competed in four events overall. The 50 Free was the last of her four, as she also competed in the 100 Free, 50 Fly and 50 Breast.
Webster also competed in four events. In addition to the 50 Free, she swam the 100 Free, 50 Back and 50 Fly.
A product of New York, N.Y., Gonzalez had a strong freshman campaign 'On the Banks' this past season. A C Finalist in the Big Ten Championships in the 50 Free, she has the third fastest time in program history in the 50 Free, swimming a 22.40 in the USA Winter Junior Nationals. She won the 50 Free at three separate events during the season and was named the Big Ten Swimmer and Freshman of the Week after the meet at Princeton.
Webster is set to join the Scarlet Knights for the fall out of Ewa Beach in Hawaii. A four-star recruit and top-150 recruit in the country, she was the No. 1 ranked swimmer in the state of Hawaii. A USA Nationals Qualifier, she was a five-time NISCA All-American.
Sorensen comes to RU from Bellingham, Washington. A three-star and top-200 recruit, she was a US National and Junior Nationals Qualifier.
