Men's Soccer Upsets No. 3 Ohio State on Road

COLUMBUS, Ohio ā Rutgers men's soccer went on the road and upset No. 3 Ohio State by a score of 2-1 on Friday night at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. It marked the third straight ranked win for RU after defeating No. 11 Princeton on Tuesday and No. 11 UCLA last Friday.
The Scarlet Knights (4-3-1, 2-0-0) went down 1-0 early but scored a pair of unanswered goals to defeat the Buckeyes (5-1-1, 0-1-1) and improve to 2-0 in Big Ten play.
While the first 20 minutes of the match saw little action, Ohio State provided the first big moment in the 23rd minute. Moving up the field in transition, the Buckeyes sent in a perfect cross that they put in the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
RU was undaunted, responding right away thanks to Braxton Montgomery. While he was making a run up the left wing, a deflected shot fell to Montgomery and he one-timed it with his right foot into the right side of the net to even things up in the 26th minute.
The teams traded chances the remainder of the half, but the score remained 1-1 after the opening 45 minutes.
The Scarlet Knights came out in the second half asking all the questions of the OSU defense. Rutgers' persistence paid off in the 55th minute after a high press won the ball back in Ohio State's area. Ultimately, the ball fell to the feet of Josh Jerome, who fired a low shot that found its way through traffic and into the back of the net.
Less than 10 minutes later came another pivotal moment in the match. After Zach Mastrodimos won the ball deep in RU's end, an Ohio State player kicked him in the back of the leg after he passed the ball out of danger. The play went to review and the Buckeye player was shown a red card, forcing Ohio State to play the final 27 minutes with 10 men.
Despite the Buckeyes pushing numbers forward and earning a few late corner kicks, the Rutgers defense once again held its ground, keeping the scoring chances to a minimum and ultimately holding OSU off the scoreboard.
The Scarlet Knights secured their third straight ranked victory, held their spot at the top of the Big Ten standings and improved to over .500 on the season.
Rutgers will have a week off before returning to action on the West Coast, taking on Washington next Friday at 10:30 p.m. in Seattle on Big Ten Plus.
