Here are answers to frequently asked questions about the Rutgers Cheerleading Team. If you have any questions not addressed below, please email us. All of the information on recruitment is posted on the Recruits page.

1. How many men and women are chosen for the team?
The Rutgers University Cheer Team consists of up to 22 men and 18 women. These numbers can fluctuate based on the level of talent being recruited.

2. What skills do I need?
The partner stunts we perform consist of one base and one flyer. Bases must be able to solely base stunts. Flyers must be able to fly on a single base.
Gymnastics skills (standing tumbling that includes a minimum of standing back tucks; running tumbling that includes a minimum of a layout, but a full is preferred).
Most women come to Rutgers with extensive gymnastics and stunting skills. We look for strong tumbling and an ability to learn, take instruction, and adapt to collegiate partner stunting.
Men must be athletic and be able to learn partner stunting skills.

3. Where can I go to improve my skills?
We suggest you look into a gymnastics or all star cheerleading gym for both tumbling and stunting.

4. Does the Rutgers Cheer Team compete?
Competition is not guaranteed. Our coaches and administrators decide whether the team will compete based on a number of factors, including basketball game schedules, game performance throughout the year, level of talent, etc. We typically compete in the D1A Cheer Division (Coed) at the UCA & UDA National College Cheerleading and Dance Team Championship held every January in Orlando, FL.

5. Does everyone compete when they are on the team?
If the coaches and administrators decide that the team will compete, they will also decide which 18-20 athletes will participate. There is a limit of eighteen competitors allowed by the UCA rules. We will compete with a mix of men and women. We do not guarantee that every member on the team will compete.

6. Can I have more information on your requirements for recruitment?
Please read the information on our Recruits page. Currently the recruit portal is down but will be available in July 2021.

7. Are returning members guaranteed a place on the team the following year?
All athletes must maintain or improve the skills they had when recruited. If an athlete's skills are lost or diminished, or the skills of incoming athletes are stronger, there is no guarantee that the returning athletes will maintain their positions on the team.

8. Are there scholarships available?
A number of discretionary scholarships are available as well as stipends awarded by various alumni organizations. All are based on varying criteria.

9. I haven't heard from Admissions about my acceptance. Is there anything you can tell me? Can you help me get into Rutgers?
As one of the nation's foremost research institutions and state universities, the application process for admittance to Rutgers is very competitive. As such, we have no access to this information. All decisions are made by the Admissions Department.
