"And now, ladies and gentlemen, here's your Rutgers University Dance Team!"
At every home football and men's and women's basketball game, this announcement brings the crowd to its feet for a performance by the Rutgers University Dance Team.
The Rutgers Dance Team is the official dance team of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, and its members serve as representatives for the University at various athletic and community events. In addition to performances and appearances at football games and men's and women's basketball games, the dancers appear on local and national television broadcasts (including ESPN, B1G Networks, ABC, and CBS) and at local community and philanthropic events.
Because of these responsibilities, those chosen for the Dance Team are skilled and talented athletes and performers who are also well-rounded students. As dancers, they embrace the opportunity to dance in front of large crowds on a weekly basis and to learn new routines every week during most of the Fall semester. As students, they represent a broad spectrum of disciplines.
Team members come from all over the nation and have very diverse dance backgrounds. In addition to learning and performing new dances every week, the team spends a good deal of time on technique that helps them to dance in unison. While they perform pom, jazz, and hip hop routines throughout the year, they compete against other top dance teams in the country in the pom and jazz categories at the UCA and UDA College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship every year.
