The Rutgers University Cheer Team consists of approximately 12 men and 13 women. All team members come from a variety of sports backgrounds, including cheerleading gymnastics, football, and wrestling. Their academic majors and minors cover a wide spectrum of disciplines. The team typically competes in the D1A Cheer Division and Spirit Program Gameday at the UCA and UDA College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championships in Orlando, Florida.
The Scarlet Knights cheerleaders serve as representatives for the University at various athletic and community events. In addition to performances and appearances at football games and men's and women's basketball games, the cheerleaders appear on local and national television broadcasts (including ESPN, B1G Networks, ABC, and CBS) and at local community and philanthropic events.
Every week, these student-athletes devote up to 20 hours to practices, games, strength training, special appearances, camps, and competitions. Like all student-athletes at Rutgers, the cheerleaders must maintain high academic standards and carry a full credit load in order to participate. All squad members are expected to be great crowd leaders, tumblers, stunters, and project the image of a collegiate athlete while representing Rutgers University.
