Shank was active in various roles in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics as a student. As a manager with the women’s program, including serving as head manager for the 2015-16 season, Shank assisted in all aspects of the behind the scenes operations of the program. Among his duties were assisting with scouting and recruiting, as well as equipment set-up, travel plans and coordinating of practices.

During his time as a student “On The Banks”, Shank was also a video and recruiting assistant with the Scarlet Knight football program and helped with Rutgers’ various summer camps including football, wrestling, men’s soccer, men’s lacrosse, as well as men’s and women’s basketball.

Shank spent the summer of 2015 as a student intern with the Lafayette College women’s basketball team.

The nephew of former Rutgers women’s basketball coach Theresa Grentz, Shank has also worked as the Vice President/Director of Operations with Grentz Elite Coaching, which provided players with individualized basketball instruction and skill development, as well as camps and clinics throughout the country.

In August of 2017, Shank spent a week with USA Basketball at its Colorado Springs Training Center for the U23 National Team tryouts and training camp. He assisted on the court activities with Connecticut head coach Geno Auriemma, Louisville head coach Jeff Walz, Princeton head coach Courtney Banghart, Western Kentucky head coach Michelle Clark-Heard and UCLA head coach Cori Close as they prepared to select and train the U23 team that represented the United States at the inaugural Four National Tournament in Japan.

Shank reprised his role with USA Basketball again in May of 2019 with the U19 and Pan American women's national team tryouts along side U19 staff of head coach Jeff Walz, Natasha Adair, and Cori Close, as well as the Pan American staff of head coach Suzy Merchant and assistants Felisha Legette-Jack and Vic Schaefer. During his stint with USAB, Shank assisted with the operations, video, equipment and on-court skills instructions for both teams.

A native of Somerset, New Jersey, Shank graduated from Rutgers in 2016 with a degree in exercise science with a concentration in sports management, and will earn a masters in global sports business from Rutgers in Spring 2022. Shank’s mother, Kathleen, was also an assistant coach under Theresa Grentz and is currently a Senior Academic Advisor with Rutgers Athletics Academic Support. Shank's younger brother, Brendan Shank, is a long snapper on the Rutgers football team.
