Carly Northup began her tenure as the Scarlet Knights' Senior Associate Athletic Director for Development in April of 2018. A native of Springfield, Va., Northup arrives "On the Banks" from Virginia Tech, where she has worked as Assistant Athletic Director for Development and External Engagement since 2014.
Northup will also hold the title of Associate Vice President for Athletics Development and report dually to Athletic Director Patrick Hobbs and Rutgers University Foundation Vice President Chris Needles. She will spearhead all athletic development efforts, including the oversight and day-to-day operations of the department, as well as strategy execution for capital and annual fund campaigns. Northup will oversee 11 athletic fundraising staff members, with five major gifts personnel and additional staff in support of annual fund, events and stewardship. The team is further supported by Foundation resources.
In Blacksburg, Northup provided the strategic direction, leadership and oversight of four primary areas – the Hokie Scholarship Fund, the Monogram Club, premium seating and suites operations, and external engagement. The Hokie Scholarship Fund was launched in May 2016 with a new programmatic giving structure, membership campaign, and benefit activation. In 2017-18, it generated $16.2 million in revenue, which signaled a 65 percent increase from the prior year. In its second year, the Fund has achieved $16.8 million in giving as of March, 2018.
In addition to revenue generation, the Hokie Scholarship Fund also implemented "The Drive for 25," a campaign resulting in approximately 3,000 new Hokie Club members, a 30 percent increase, in its initial year.
Northup was a member of a Tech team which generated $23 million in total revenue in 2016, $32 million in total revenue in 2017, and has secured $47 million in total revenue as of March 31, 2018. Premium seating revenue and sales also increased during her tenure, via the creation and implementation of courtside seating at men's and women's basketball, matside seats at wrestling, as well as suite and hospitality sales at baseball.
From 2008-14, Northup was a member of a University of Missouri development team that raised $84 million towards Mizzou's "Going for Gold" campaign. During her tenure, the Tigers experienced a 60 percent increase in annual fund donor membership and a 40 percent increase in annual fund gift growth. She also had oversight of premium seating, the Tiger Scholarship Fund donor stewardship and cultivation programmatic elements, special events, and sport specific booster groups.
Northup began her professional career as a teacher at Liberty Christian Academy in Lynchburg, Va., from 2002-06, where she also served as girls' soccer head coach and girls' basketball assistant coach. She entered collegiate athletics at West Virginia University, initially working as a graduate student in the Mountaineer Athletic Club before being elevated to assistant director of development from 2006-08.
Northup earned a bachelor's of science in english and psychology from Liberty University in 2002 before receiving a master's in sport management and administration from West Virginia in 2007.
