PISCATAWAY, NJ - Rutgers senior linebacker Gary Brackett (Glassboro,
NJ) has signed a free agent contract with the Indianapolis Colts. Brackett
was contacted by the representatives of the Colts following the conclusion
of the National Football League Draft on Sunday, and is looking forward to
attending the team’s mini-camp later this week.
"
I'm very excited. I had talked to them earlier in the week and I knew they
had interest in me,” said Brackett. “My whole life I've wanted
to play football and through hard work, things have been able to work out for
me. I'm pleased I have my foot in the door.”
Brackett, who earned a spot on the Scarlet Knights’ roster as a walk-on,
was a two-time recipient of the Homer Hazel Award as the MVP of the Rutgers
football team (2001, 2002). Brackett was also honored with the 12th Man Award
following the 2000 season as Rutgers’ top special teams’ player.
As a senior in 2002, Brackett was Rutgers leading tackler with 130 stops.
Brackett was also the second leading tackler in the BIG EAST Conference as
a senior. Elected captain of the Scarlet Knights in both the 2001 and 2002
seaons, Brackett finished his Rutgers career with 274 tackles.
