PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers men's lacrosse opened Big Ten Conference play in a big way on Saturday night, downing No. 9 Johns Hopkins 16-9 in front of 3,653 fans at High Point Solutions Stadium. The victory was Rutgers first win over Johns Hopkins since 1990. It was the highest ranked opponent beaten by the Scarlet Knights since 2007, when they defeated No. 8 Loyola.

Redshirt freshman Adam Charalambides led the team with four goals. Ryan Hollingsworth added a career-high three goals, all on extra-man opportunities. Scott Bieda paced the squad with six points (three goals, three assists). Jules Heningburg and Josh Jordan each added two goals. Kris Alleyne made 14 saves between the pipes to improve his record to 5-2.

"This is a huge signature win for our program," head coach Brian Brecht said. "I thought our defense was outstanding. Kris was outstanding in the goal. Our rope unit continues to do a great job, not only defensively, but feeding that high powered offense. It was just a great team win."

Rutgers held a 30-27 edge on ground balls and forced 10 JHU turnovers. The Scarlet Knights held Johns Hopkins' extra-man offense, which entered the game as the most efficient in the nation at 61.5 percent, to 0-for-3. RU was 16-of-16 on clears.

Rutgers struck first and never looked back. Hollingworth and Christian Trasolini scored in the first quarter, and the home team held a 2-0 lead after 15 minutes of play.

The Blue Jays got back within one goal at 3-2 and 4-3, as Ryan Brown scored the first three goals for the Blue Jays. But Rutgers counted with a four-goal run to end the second half, taking an 8-3 halftime advantage.

The Blue Jays' John Crawley scored twice to open the second half, getting the visitors within three goals at 8-5. After it became 9-6, Rutgers used a five-goal run to break the game open. The run came over an eight minute stretch extending into the fourth quarter, putting RU ahead 14-6. The Scarlet Knights held on from there, earning a seven-goal margin of victory.

"It is games like this, a big time signature win, that make all the hard work pay off," Brecht said. "We've got great leadership from our captains and our senior class. We have some hungry freshmen who are all about winning. We continue to get better each week."

Big Ten Conference play continues next weekend. Rutgers will host Michigan on Sunday at noon at High Point Solutions Stadium.

Postgame Notes

The win was the highest ranked team RU has beaten since a 17-7 victory over No. 8 Loyola on April 7, 2007.

The starting attack (Bieda, Charalambides, Heningburg) combined for nine goals and eight assists.

The attendance was 3,653. It was the largest crowd to watch a lacrosse game at High Point Solutions Stadium and the largest crowd for a true home game in over 10 years.

The Scarlet Knights are unbeaten at home (5-0).

Kris Alleyne's 14 saves were a season high.

Bieda now has 88 career assists. He passes John Valestra for ninth place all-time at Rutgers.

Bieda now has a 30 game point-scoring strea (54 goals, 59 assists, 113 points during that span).

Heningurg now has 22 goals on the season, a new career-high.

Heningburg's six points (two goals, four assists) tie his career-high. His four assists were a new career-high.

Charalmbides leads the team with a Big Ten best 29 goals.

Freshman Josh Jordan had his fourth multi-goal game of the season.

Christian Scarpello scored his second goal of the season (a new career-high).

Alex Schoen led the team with five ground balls.

RU held Johns Hopkins to its second lowest scoring output of the season.

Rutgers earned its fifth win lifetime against Johns Hopkins (36 games). It was only the second win over JHU in the past 50 years.

Rutgers has now defeated a top-ten opponent in consecutive seasons (defeated No. 10 Ohio State in last season's finale).

Rutgers' eight wins tie for the most in a season under head coach Brian Brecht.

Rutgers' 8-2 start is their best record after 10 games since starting the 2003 season at 8-2.
