PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers men's lacrosse freshman attackman
Tommy Coyne was named Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon. Coyne scored three goals and added an assist for four points in Rutgers' game last Saturday at then-No. 12 Army.
An early enrollee who graduated high school in December in order to join the Scarlet Knights in January, Coyne broke out in his third career game and second career start. He recorded a hat trick for the first three goals of his career, scoring three times in a span of one minute and 14 second to help rally RU on the road from a 5-1 deficit to a 5-5 tie at halftime. The Naperville, Illinois native was the only freshmen in the Big Ten with at least three goals in a game this week.
This is the second Big Ten weekly award earned by Rutgers this year, after
Garrett Michaeli was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after the season opener. The last Rutgers Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor went to
Kieran Mullins last May, his fourth Freshman of the Week award of that season.
Rutgers returns home this Saturday to host Fairfield at noon. Tickets for the 2018 season are on sale through the Rutgers Ticket Office online or by calling 1-866-445-GORU (4678).
